Surah Az-Zumar — Verse 39

Word Meanings:

• عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمْ — "upon your position/place": meaning, continue in your state, your way, and your approach that you have chosen for yourselves.
• إِنِّي عَامِلٌ — "indeed I am working": meaning, I will continue acting upon my own path and what I have been commanded with.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet, say to your people who persist in stubborn disbelief and arrogance: "Continue upon the path you have chosen for yourselves — the worship of those who cannot benefit or harm you, and the rejection of the One who created you and owns your affairs entirely. I, on the other hand, will continue upon the path my Lord has commanded me — calling to His Oneness, and dedicating all my words and deeds to Him alone."

Do not think that this difference between us will go unresolved. Very soon, you will come to know — when the truth becomes clear and the outcomes are revealed — which of us will receive a humiliating punishment in this worldly life, and upon whom will descend an everlasting torment in the Hereafter that neither ceases nor lifts.

This is not a threat of anger, but a declaration of certainty. The Prophet ﷺ did not waver in his mission, nor did he despair of his people. Rather, he presented the matter with clarity and left the choice to them, while affirming that the consequence of every path is inevitable. The one who acts sincerely for Allah will find honor and success, and the one who persists in falsehood will face a reckoning that cannot be escaped.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: certainty in the truth does not require the approval of others. The Prophet ﷺ stood firm, doing what was right regardless of opposition. And you, dear reader, are invited to reflect: which path leads to lasting success? The path of those who follow their desires, or the path of those who submit to their Creator? The answer will be known by all — in this life or the next. Choose wisely, for every soul shall taste the fruit of its own deeds.
