📖 English Meaning
And if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "Allah." Say, "Then have you considered what you invoke besides Allah? If Allah intended me harm, are they removers of His harm; or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His mercy?" Say, "Sufficient for me is Allah; upon Him [alone] rely the [wise] reliers."

Word Meanings:

  • Kāshifātu Ḍurrih – Removers of His harm; i.e., can they avert or lift the affliction that Allah has decreed?
  • Mumsikātu Raḥmatih – Withholders of His mercy; i.e., can they prevent or hold back the mercy that Allah has willed to bestow?
  • Ḥasbiya Allah – Allah is sufficient for me; He alone is my complete and total reliance.
  • Yatawakkal al-Mutawakkilūn – Upon Him the trusters place their trust; the ones who truly rely on Allah depend on Him alone.

Explanation of the Verse:

If you, O Messenger, were to ask these polytheists who worship others alongside Allah, “Who created the heavens and the earth?” they would undoubtedly answer, “Allah created them.” They openly admit that He alone is the Creator of all existence, for the evidence is so clear and undeniable that even they cannot deny it. Yet despite this confession, they still call upon idols and false deities besides Him.

So Allah instructs you to say to them: “Tell me then, about those beings you invoke and worship instead of Allah — if Allah intends to afflict me with harm or hardship, can these idols remove that harm or lift that affliction? And if Allah intends to bestow upon me mercy, blessings, or prosperity, can these idols withhold His mercy or prevent it from reaching me?” The answer is self-evident: they cannot do any of that. They possess no power whatsoever — not to bring benefit, not to repel harm, not to change what Allah has decreed.

Then Allah commands you to declare: “Allah is sufficient for me. Upon Him alone do those who truly rely place their trust.” For the One who holds all power over harm and benefit, over giving and withholding, is the only One worthy of complete reliance. The one who places his trust in Allah has indeed grasped the firmest handhold, for Allah will suffice him in all his affairs — bringing what benefits him and protecting him from what harms him.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse beautifully exposes the contradiction in the hearts of the disbelievers: they acknowledge Allah as the Creator, yet they turn to powerless idols for help. What a profound lesson for every soul! If you already know that Allah alone created the heavens and the earth, then why would you place your hopes in anything else? The One who brought the universe into existence from nothing is surely capable of removing your distress, healing your wounds, and granting you His mercy.

Let this be a gentle reminder to purify your heart: direct your prayers, your hopes, and your complete trust to Allah alone. When hardship strikes, turn to Him — He is the only One who can lift it. When you seek blessings, ask from Him — He is the only One who can grant them. Say with full conviction, “Ḥasbiya Allah” — Allah is sufficient for me — and watch how He fills your life with peace, protection, and provision beyond your imagination. For those who truly place their trust in Allah, He never lets them down. He is the best Guardian, the most Merciful Provider, and His sufficiency is more than enough for every need.

Is not Allah sufficient for His Servant [Prophet Muhammad]? And [yet], they threaten you with those [they worship] other than Him. And whoever Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide.
37وَمَن يَهْدِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِن مُّضِلٍّ ۗ أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِعَزِيزٍ ذِي انتِقَامٍ
And whoever Allah guides - for him there is no misleader. Is not Allah Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution?

40مَن يَأْتِيهِ عَذَابٌ يُخْزِيهِ وَيَحِلُّ عَلَيْهِ عَذَابٌ مُّقِيمٌ
