Tafsir (Explanation):
In this noble verse, Allah — the Most High — clarifies a profound truth about human interaction: most of what people whisper and discuss privately among themselves carries no real benefit or lasting good. Much of this secret talk is wasted on trivialities, gossip, or even harm. However, Allah, in His infinite mercy, makes an exception — a shining exception that transforms private conversation into a source of immense reward.
The exception is when one's whispered counsel or discussion is directed toward one of three noble purposes:
First: Commanding or encouraging charity (ṣadaqah) — whether giving wealth to the needy, feeding the hungry, or helping someone in distress. Even if a person has no money themselves, they can urge others to give, and this itself is a form of goodness.
Second: Calling to maʿrūf — every word or action that is good, virtuous, and pleasing to Allah and sound human nature. This includes speaking kind words, offering beneficial advice, guiding someone to truth, or promoting any act of righteousness that the Shariah endorses and the intellect finds praiseworthy.
Third: Working toward reconciliation between people (iṣlāḥ bayna al-nās) — mending broken relationships, resolving family disputes, settling conflicts between friends, or bringing harmony to a community. This is among the most beloved deeds to Allah, for it heals the social fabric and spreads love where hatred once grew.
Then comes the beautiful promise: whoever does these things seeking the pleasure of Allah — not for show, not for praise, not for personal gain — Allah will grant them a mighty reward (ajran ʿaẓīman) . This reward is vast beyond imagination, encompassing blessings in this life and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this verse: Allah does not merely forbid harmful speech; He elevates even our private conversations into opportunities for worship. A single word of reconciliation, a gentle nudge toward charity, a sincere advice given in secret — all can become mountains of reward when the intention is pure.
So let us seize this divine invitation. Let our whispered words be seeds of goodness, our private counsel be a means of healing, and our hearts be focused solely on winning the pleasure of our Lord. For indeed, the One who hears every secret and knows every intention has promised: whoever seeks His pleasure through these noble acts shall never be deprived of a reward that is truly magnificent.
