Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse delivers a profound and serious warning to anyone who, after the truth has become absolutely clear and undeniable, chooses to turn away from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and instead follows a path that contradicts the way of the believers. The phrase "after the guidance has become clear to him" emphasizes that this person is not acting out of ignorance or confusion — they have seen the light, understood the truth, and still deliberately reject it.
The verse describes two intertwined sins: first, opposing the Prophet himself — rejecting his commands, his teachings, and his authority as the final messenger of Allah; and second, abandoning the collective path of the believers — the community of Muslims who have submitted to Allah and follow the Prophet's example. To leave this path is to isolate oneself from the mercy, protection, and unity that come with being part of the believing community.
The consequence is stated with absolute clarity: "We will leave him to what he has turned to." This means Allah — in His perfect justice — will abandon this person to the very path they chose, withholding His guidance and support from them. They will be left to wander in their misguidance, and their own choices will lead them to destruction. Then, in the Hereafter, they will be cast into Hellfire — a place of intense heat and suffering — and what an evil destination that is.
This verse was revealed regarding a specific incident involving a man who, after being exposed for theft, fled to Mecca out of fear of punishment and shame, renounced his faith, and attempted to rob the people there — only to be killed when a wall collapsed on him. This story serves as a living example of how turning away from the truth after knowing it leads to ruin in this world and the next.
A Da’wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the immense mercy of Allah that is woven into this warning. The fact that Allah clearly tells us the consequences of opposition is itself a gift — He does not leave us guessing. He shows us the road to salvation and warns us of the road to destruction so that we may choose wisely. The path of the believers is not a restriction; it is a sanctuary. It is a path of peace, purpose, and eternal success. When you walk with the community of believers — following the Messenger, loving what he loved, and avoiding what he warned against — you are never alone. You are guided by revelation, supported by your brothers and sisters in faith, and protected by the Most Merciful.
Do not let arrogance, desire, or worldly temptations pull you away from this path. The truth has been made clear — the Qur’an is before you, the Sunnah is your guide, and the example of the righteous believers is your inspiration. Embrace this path with an open heart, and you will find in it a peace that no other way can offer. And if you ever feel distant, know that Allah’s door of repentance is always open — He loves those who turn back to Him. Choose the path of the believers today, and secure a future of eternal bliss.
