Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Sū’ (السوء): Evil, wrongdoing, or sin — anything that displeases Allah.
- Bi-Jahālah (بجهالة): In ignorance or foolishness — meaning the person commits the sin without fully comprehending its grave consequences, even if they know it is prohibited.
- Min Qarīb (من قريب): From near — meaning before death approaches, while there is still time to repent.
- Yatūbu Allahu ‘alayhim (يتوب الله عليهم): Allah accepts their repentance and turns to them with His mercy and forgiveness.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse clarifies a fundamental truth about repentance: Allah’s acceptance of repentance is specifically for those who commit evil out of ignorance — and this includes every sinner, whether they erred unintentionally or deliberately, because anyone who disobeys Allah is considered ignorant of the true magnitude of His wrath and the severe consequences of sin. Such a person then turns back to their Lord in sincere repentance, returning to obedience and seeking His pleasure *before* the moment of death arrives — before the soul reaches the throat and the angel of death takes them. For these people, Allah promises to accept their repentance, wipe away their sins, and shower them with His boundless mercy. And Allah is Ever-Knowing of the true state of His servants — He knows who is sincere in their repentance and who is merely pretending — and He is All-Wise in His decrees, His legislation, and His perfect timing in accepting or delaying acceptance according to His infinite wisdom.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear brother or sister in humanity, look at the beauty of this verse! It is a door of hope that Allah Himself has opened for you — no matter how many mistakes you have made, no matter how deep you have fallen into sin, the door of repentance remains wide open as long as your heart still beats and your soul has not yet left your body. Allah does not say, “Repentance is for the righteous only.” Rather, He says it is for those who commit evil — and then repent. This is the Most Merciful calling you to come back to Him, not to despair of His mercy. Do not let Shaytan whisper to you that you are too sinful or too far gone. Run to your Lord now, in this very moment, with a sincere heart, and you will find Him waiting with open arms of forgiveness. He knows your struggles, He sees your tears, and He is Wise in how He deals with you — so trust Him, turn to Him, and taste the sweetness of a heart cleansed by His mercy.
