Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Sayyi'at (السيئات): Evil deeds, sins, and acts of disobedience against Allah's commands.
- Hatta idha hadara al-mawt (حتى إذا حضر الموت): Until death approaches and the pangs of death become visible—the final moments of one's life.
- A'tadna (أعتدنا): We have prepared and made ready.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse clarifies a crucial matter regarding the acceptance of repentance—a matter of life-and-death significance for every soul. Allah, in His infinite mercy, opens the door of repentance to His servants throughout their lives, but this verse draws a clear boundary: repentance is not accepted from those who persist in sin and evil deeds, delaying their return to Allah, until the very moment death approaches them. When the death rattle reaches their throat and the angel of death appears, only then do they exclaim, "I repent now!"—but at that moment, repentance is of no avail, for the time of accountability has come to an end, and the opportunity has passed.
Allah also excludes from acceptance the repentance of those who die while persisting in disbelief—those who reject the oneness of Allah and the message of His final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). For such people, no repentance will be accepted at the point of death, for they have chosen to live their entire lives in rejection of the truth.
For all these—those who delayed repentance until the final breath and those who died in a state of disbelief—Allah has prepared a painful and humiliating punishment. The severity of this warning serves as a powerful reminder that the door of repentance, while vast and merciful, is not open indefinitely.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, how merciful is our Lord! He has given us countless breaths, countless days and nights, to turn back to Him. He does not require perfection from us—only sincerity and a genuine return. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Allah extends His hand at night to accept the repentance of the sinner of the day, and extends His hand during the day to accept the repentance of the sinner of the night, until the sun rises from the west" (Muslim).
Do not be among those who postpone repentance until tomorrow, for tomorrow may never come. Seize this very moment—while your heart is soft, while your breath is still in your body—and turn to your Lord with a sincere heart. Say: "O Allah, I repent to You from all my sins, and I resolve never to return to them." For Allah rejoices in the repentance of His servant more than a traveler who finds his lost camel in the desert after despairing of it.
The gates of Paradise are open, and the path of forgiveness is illuminated. Do not let Shaytan deceive you into delaying, for death comes suddenly and without warning. Repent now, before it is too late, and taste the sweetness of forgiveness that no worldly pleasure can match.
