Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Tarithu al-nisa'a karhan" (تَرِثُوا النِّسَاءَ كَرْهًا): Inheriting women against their will — a pre-Islamic practice where a deceased man's relative would take over his widow as if she were part of the estate, controlling her marriage or preventing her from marrying.
- "Ta'duluhunna" (تَعْضُلُوهُنَّ): To pressure, oppress, or restrict women — specifically, a husband harming his wife to force her to give up her dowry or rights.
- "Fahishah mubayyinah" (فَاحِشَةٍ مُّبَيِّنَةٍ): A clear, evident immoral act — such as adultery or blatant disobedience.
- "Ashiru hunna bil-ma'ruf" (عَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ): Live and deal with them kindly, fairly, and honorably, according to what is recognized as good and just.
The Interpretation:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger! Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, addresses you directly to correct the injustices that prevailed in the pre-Islamic era of ignorance. He declares that it is absolutely unlawful for you to inherit women as if they were property — taking control of widows or female relatives against their will, whether by forcing them into marriage, preventing them from marrying, or disposing of their affairs as you please. Such practices strip women of their dignity, autonomy, and God-given rights, and Allah has forbidden them completely.
Furthermore, Allah prohibits husbands from harming or oppressing their wives out of dislike or resentment, with the hidden motive of pressuring them to surrender part of their dowry or financial rights in exchange for freedom. This is a grave injustice — a woman's mahr (dowry) is her exclusive right, and no man may take it back through coercion or ill-treatment. The only exception to this rule is if the wife commits a clear, proven immoral act, such as adultery; in that case, the husband may seek restitution, but even then, the matter should be handled with justice and within the boundaries set by Allah.
Then comes a beautiful, timeless command: "And live with them in kindness." This is not merely a suggestion — it is a divine obligation. Treat your wives with gentleness, respect, and fairness in words and deeds. Speak to them kindly, fulfill their rights, and honor them as partners in life. Just as you desire good treatment from them, you must extend the same to them.
Finally, Allah addresses the human reality of marital discord: if you find yourselves disliking your wives for worldly reasons — whether due to their appearance, temperament, or other matters — be patient and do not rush to divorce or mistreatment. For perhaps the very thing you dislike contains abundant good that you cannot see. Through patience, Allah may bless you with righteous children, mutual affection, or other hidden blessings that outweigh your initial aversion. How often does a person despise something, only to find it becomes the source of their greatest happiness and success?
This verse is a profound call to justice, compassion, and faith — reminding believers that their relationship with their spouses is not merely a worldly contract, but a sacred bond governed by divine ethics. It elevates women from objects of inheritance to honored partners, and it teaches men that true strength lies not in domination, but in kindness, patience, and trust in Allah's wisdom. Embrace these teachings, and you will find peace in your homes and blessings in your lives, for Allah never commands anything except that it holds immense good for His servants.
