Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse establishes a fundamental right for women in Islam — the right to their own dowry. Allah commands husbands to give their wives their dowries in full, as a generous and obligatory gift, not as a payment for services or a token of obligation. The word *niḥlah* beautifully conveys that this is a heartfelt, sincere offering from the husband to his wife, reflecting honor, love, and respect.
The verse then addresses a practical and compassionate situation: if the wife, of her own free will and with a contented heart, chooses to waive a portion of her dowry or give it back to her husband, then he may accept it and use it. This permission is conditional upon her genuine willingness — the phrase *ṭibna lakum ʿan shayʾin minhu nafsan* emphasizes that her consent must be real, voluntary, and free from any form of pressure, manipulation, or coercion.
When such a sincere gift is given, Allah describes it as *hanī’an marī’an* — wholesome and agreeable. This means the husband can enjoy it with a clear conscience, knowing it is lawful and blessed, with no lingering resentment or regret on either side.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear brothers and sisters, this verse is a profound demonstration of Islam’s justice and mercy. It elevates the status of women by granting them full ownership of their wealth and honoring their autonomy. It also teaches husbands to be generous and respectful, and it encourages mutual love and trust within the family. When a wife gives willingly, it is a sign of her love and generosity — and the husband should receive it with gratitude and appreciation, not as a right or an expectation.
Let us embody these beautiful teachings in our lives: honor the rights of others, give generously, and build families on the foundations of mutual respect, kindness, and sincere hearts. This is the path to true happiness and divine blessings in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah guide us all to practice His commands with love and devotion.
