Word Meanings:
- As-Sufahā’ (السفهاء): Those who are foolish or imprudent in handling wealth—whether men, women, or children—who spend money inappropriately or waste it.
- Qiyāman (قيامًا): That by which people’s lives and livelihoods are sustained and maintained; the foundation upon which daily affairs and welfare stand.
- Qawlan Ma‘rūfan (قولًا معروفًا): Kind, gentle, and appropriate speech that is recognized as good and fitting in society, without harshness or offense.
Explanation of the Verse:
O guardians and trustees of wealth! Do not hand over the property under your care to those who are reckless or lack sound judgment in managing it—be they men, women, or children—for this wealth is a means by which Allah has established the stability and welfare of human life. It is a trust that must be protected and invested wisely, not squandered. Instead, from this wealth, you are commanded to provide for their sustenance—feeding them and clothing them according to their needs—and to speak to them with gentle, kind, and encouraging words. Promise them, with goodness, that when they reach maturity and demonstrate sound judgment, their wealth will be returned to them in full. This approach combines firm protection of resources with compassionate care for the individuals, ensuring both their present needs and their future empowerment.
Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse beautifully illustrates the holistic wisdom of Islam in safeguarding both wealth and human dignity. Allah, in His infinite mercy, teaches us that wealth is not an end in itself but a means to sustain life, support families, and build communities. By instructing guardians to protect the assets of the vulnerable while simultaneously providing for their daily needs with kindness and respect, Islam establishes a balanced system of care that honors every person’s worth. Notice how the verse does not merely prohibit a wrong action—it replaces it with a positive, compassionate alternative: feed them, clothe them, and speak to them with words that heal and uplift. This is the beauty of our faith: it never leaves a void but fills it with goodness. As believers, we are called to be trustees of Allah’s blessings, managing them with wisdom and mercy, and in doing so, we draw closer to Him and reflect His attributes of justice and compassion in our dealings. Let this verse inspire you to be a source of protection and kindness for those who cannot yet manage their own affairs, knowing that every act of responsible care is an act of worship that Allah loves and rewards.
