Explanation of the Verse:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger! Do not approach the prayer or enter the places of prayer—the mosques—while you are intoxicated, until you are fully aware of what you are saying. This command came before the complete prohibition of alcohol, as a gradual step in Islamic legislation, teaching the believer to stand before Allah with a clear mind and a present heart. Likewise, do not approach the prayer or the mosque while in a state of major impurity (janabah), unless you are merely passing through from one door to another without lingering, until you have performed the full purification (ghusl).
And if you are ill—such that using water would harm you or delay your recovery—or you are on a journey, or one of you has relieved himself, or you have had intimate relations with your wives, and you cannot find water (or are unable to use it), then turn to clean, pure earth and wipe your faces and your hands with it. This is the divine concession of tayammum—a mercy from Allah that lightens your burden and keeps your worship intact in all circumstances.
Indeed, Allah is Ever-Pardoning and Ever-Forgiving. He does not burden you beyond what you can bear, and He opens doors of ease for you in every hardship.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful demonstration of Islam's balance between discipline and mercy. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, does not demand from you what is beyond your capacity. When He commands you to purify yourself for prayer, He also provides alternatives when water is unavailable or harmful. This is the religion of ease—a religion that meets you where you are and elevates you step by step. The gradual prohibition of intoxicants here shows Allah's compassion: He does not uproot habits overnight but guides His servants gently toward perfection.
Beloved believer, see how your Lord cares for you! He wants you to stand before Him in prayer with a conscious, attentive heart—not distracted, not impure, but fully present. And when circumstances make it difficult, He grants you a way out. This is the beauty of Islam: it is not a religion of hardship, but a path of mercy that leads you to the ultimate success in this life and the Hereafter. Embrace these divine teachings with love and gratitude, for they are the keys to tranquility and closeness to your Creator.
