Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Yawma'idhin (يَوْمَئِذٍ): On that Day — referring to the Day of Resurrection.
- Yawaddu (يَوَدُّ): To wish or long for deeply.
- Alladhīna kafarū (الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا): Those who disbelieved — rejected faith in Allah and His oneness.
- Wa ʿaṣawu al-rasūl (وَعَصَوُا الرَّسُولَ): And disobeyed the Messenger — meaning they opposed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and refused his call.
- Law tu-sawwā bihim al-arḍ (لَوْ تُسَوَّىٰ بِهِمُ الْأَرْضُ): "If only the earth were leveled with them" — i.e., they wish to become dust, buried and equal with the ground, so they would not be raised for judgment.
- Lā yaktumūna Allāha ḥadīthan (وَلَا يَكْتُمُونَ اللَّهَ حَدِيثًا): They cannot conceal from Allah any word or matter — nothing they did or said can be hidden from Him.
The Interpretation:
On that tremendous Day — the Day when every soul faces the reality of its deeds — those who rejected faith and disobeyed the Messenger will be seized by a wish so intense that it burns in their hearts: they will long to be leveled with the earth, to become mere dust beneath the soil, so that they would never be resurrected to face the reckoning. They will crave annihilation over accountability, for they know the weight of their sins and the terror of what awaits them.
But this wish will never be granted. Instead, they will find themselves standing before their Lord, utterly exposed. They will try to deny their misdeeds, to hide their crimes with their tongues — but Allah, the All-Knowing, will seal their mouths. Their hands will speak, their feet will testify, and their very skins will bear witness to every action they committed in this worldly life. Not a single word, not a single deed, not even the innermost secrets of their hearts will remain hidden from Allah.
This verse serves as a profound reminder of two essential truths. First, the reality of the Hereafter is certain — no one can escape it, and no wish for extinction can erase the appointment with justice. Second, Allah's knowledge encompasses everything; nothing is concealed from Him, whether in this life or the next.
For the believer, this is a call to live with awareness and sincerity. If the disbelievers will wish for the earth to swallow them on that Day, then the wise soul is the one who prepares now — through faith, obedience, and repentance — so that when that Day comes, there will be no wish for disappearance, but rather a joyful meeting with a Merciful Lord. Let this verse awaken your heart to the fleeting nature of this world and the eternal reality of the next. Turn to Allah now, before the Day when no wish can change your fate, and let your deeds speak for you in the best of ways.
