Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Wa qihim – "And protect them" or "And shield them" – meaning: keep them safe and ward off from them.
- Al-Sayyi’at – "The evil deeds" or "the bad consequences of deeds" – here it refers to the punishments and harms resulting from sins, and also the sins themselves that lead to those punishments.
- Yawma’idhin – "On that Day" – meaning the Day of Judgment.
- Al-Fawz al-‘Azim – "The great success" or "the supreme triumph" – the ultimate victory that has no equal.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this blessed supplication, the believers – who have just asked their Lord to forgive their sins and admit them into the Gardens of Paradise – continue their heartfelt plea with a second, equally profound request: "And protect them from the evil deeds." This is a prayer that Allah shields them from the harmful consequences of their sins, and from being held accountable for them in a way that leads to punishment. It is also a request that He guards them from committing evil deeds in the future, for the one who is protected from sins in this world is saved from their bitter fruits in the Hereafter.
Then Allah, the Most High, reveals the magnificent reward tied to this protection: "And whoever You protect from the evil deeds on that Day – You have indeed had mercy upon him." This means that the one whom Allah shields from the punishment of his bad deeds on the Day of Reckoning has truly received Allah’s mercy – the most comprehensive and complete mercy that spares him from the Fire and admits him into eternal bliss.
And then comes the crowning statement: "And that is the great success." This is the ultimate victory – the triumph that surpasses every worldly achievement. No wealth, no power, no pleasure of this fleeting life can compare to the success of standing before Allah on that Day, free from the burden of sins, and entering His everlasting Paradise. It is a success that never fades, a joy that never ends, and a reward that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever imagined.
A Da’wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this beautiful supplication. The believers in this verse are not merely asking for Paradise – they are asking for protection from the very things that would block their path to it. This teaches us a profound lesson: the way to Paradise is not only through good deeds, but also through guarding ourselves from sins. And the greatest mercy of Allah is not just to forgive us after we fall, but to protect us from falling in the first place.
This verse also fills the heart with hope. No matter how many sins you have committed, the door of Allah’s mercy is wide open. The believers in this verse were ordinary human beings who made mistakes, yet they turned to Allah with humility and sincerity, and Allah responded by teaching them this prayer – a prayer that guarantees success if sincerely uttered and acted upon.
So, make this supplication your own. Repeat it in your prayers, in your moments of reflection, and in your times of need. Ask Allah to protect you from the evil consequences of your deeds, and to shield you from sins in the future. For the one whom Allah protects on that Day has indeed achieved the greatest success – a success that makes every hardship of this world seem insignificant, and every sacrifice worthwhile.
May Allah, the Most Merciful, protect us all from evil deeds and their consequences, and grant us the great success of His Paradise. Ameen.
