Word Meanings:

  • Waḥyan (وَحْيًا): Divine inspiration or revelation placed directly into the heart or mind of a prophet, without any intermediary.
  • Min warā’i ḥijāb (مِن وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ): From behind a veil or barrier, meaning the person hears Allah’s speech but does not see Him.
  • Rasūlan (رَسُولًا): An angelic messenger, such as Jibrīl (Gabriel), sent to convey the revelation to a human prophet.
  • Yuḥī (يُوحِي): To convey or inspire the revelation.
  • ʿAliyy (عَلِيّ): The Most High, Exalted in His essence, attributes, and authority above all creation.
  • Ḥakīm (حَكِيم): The All-Wise, who perfectly ordains all matters with wisdom and precision.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse clarifies the exalted nature of Allah and the manner in which He communicates with His creation. It establishes that it is not possible for any human being to speak directly with Allah in this worldly life except through one of three divinely appointed ways:

First: Through direct revelation (waḥy) — Allah inspires the heart of His chosen prophet with knowledge, guidance, or a message, without any intermediary. This is the most common form, as experienced by many prophets in their spiritual journeys.

Second: From behind a veil (ḥijāb) — The person hears Allah’s speech but does not see Him. This is exemplified by Prophet Mūsā (Moses), peace be upon him, who was honored by Allah speaking to him directly from behind a veil, hearing His words without beholding His essence.

Third: Through an angelic messenger — Allah sends an angel, such as Jibrīl, who delivers the revelation to the human prophet. The angel conveys exactly what Allah wills, not adding or omitting anything, and this occurs only by Allah’s permission and command.

The verse then concludes with two of Allah’s beautiful attributes: Al-ʿAliyy (the Most High) — He is exalted above any resemblance to His creation, and His speech is not like human speech; and Al-Ḥakīm (the All-Wise) — He chooses the most appropriate method of communication for each situation, according to His infinite wisdom.

This verse also affirms the attribute of speech (kalām) for Allah, in a manner befitting His majesty, without likening it to the speech of His creatures.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

How magnificent is this Qur’anic verse in elevating the status of divine communication! It teaches us that Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, does not leave His servants without guidance. Rather, He reaches out to humanity through revelation — sometimes directly to the heart, sometimes from behind a veil, and sometimes through the noble angels. This is a profound sign of His love and care for His creation.

Reflect, dear reader: the One who spoke to Mūsā from behind the veil, who inspired the hearts of His prophets, and who sent Jibrīl with the Qur’an — this same Allah is near to you today. He hears your supplications, knows your secrets, and has sent you His final Book as a living miracle. The fact that you can read His words, understand His commands, and connect with Him through prayer is a gift beyond measure.

Let this verse strengthen your faith and fill your heart with awe. Allah, the Most High and All-Wise, has chosen to communicate with humanity out of His mercy. Respond to His call by drawing closer to Him, reciting His Book with reflection, and living by His guidance. For He is the One who, despite His absolute exaltation, has made Himself known to you — so that you may know Him, love Him, and worship Him alone.

📜 Verse 49-53 — Ash-Shura

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He creates what he wills. He gives to whom He wills female [children], and He gives to whom He wills males.
Or He makes them [both] males and females, and He renders whom He wills barren. Indeed, He is Knowing and Competent.
And it is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a partition or that He sends a messenger to reveal, by His permission, what He wills. Indeed, He is Most High and Wise.
And thus We have revealed to you an inspiration of Our command. You did not know what is the Book or [what is] faith, but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, [O Muhammad], you guide to a straight path -
The path of Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Unquestionably, to Allah do [all] matters evolve.
