Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Haqq (الحق) — The truth; here it refers to the Qur'an, which is the absolute truth revealed by Allah.
- Sihr (سحر) — Magic or sorcery; a false claim they made to discredit the revelation.
- Kafirun (كافرون) — Disbelievers; those who reject and deny the truth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the Qur'an — the undeniable truth from Allah — came to the disbelievers of Makkah, awakening them from their heedlessness and calling them to the worship of the One True God, they did not respond with reflection or acceptance. Instead, they responded with something even worse than their initial ignorance: they said, "This is nothing but magic," claiming that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was bewitching them with his words. They declared, "We are disbelievers in it" — meaning they would never believe in it, no matter how clear and convincing it was.
Their response reveals a deep-seated arrogance and stubbornness. They did not say, "Let us examine this message" or "Let us ponder its truths." Rather, they immediately dismissed it with a label — "magic" — a word they used to avoid confronting the reality of the revelation. They combined their polytheism with outright defiance of the truth, belittling the Qur'an and mocking the Messenger who brought it. They closed their hearts and minds, refusing to accept the very guidance that would have saved them in this life and the next.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: how often do we, too, reject the truth when it comes to us — not because it is unclear, but because it challenges our desires, habits, or pride? The Qur'an is not magic; it is a living miracle that has transformed hearts and civilizations for over fourteen centuries. Its words carry a light that dispels darkness, a mercy that heals wounded souls, and a guidance that leads to eternal success. When the truth reaches you, do not be like those who turned away with arrogance. Instead, open your heart, ponder its verses, and let its wisdom illuminate your path. For the one who sincerely seeks the truth will find that the Qur'an speaks directly to their soul — and there is no greater treasure than that.
