Word Meanings:

  • Matta'tu (مَتَّعْتُ): I granted enjoyment, prolonged their stay, and gave them respite in worldly life.
  • Ha'ula'i (هَٰؤُلَاءِ): These people — referring to the disbelievers of Quraysh and their contemporaries.
  • Al-Haqq (الْحَقُّ): The truth — meaning the Qur'an, which is the ultimate and undeniable truth.
  • Rasulun Mubin (رَسُولٌ مُّبِينٌ): A clear and manifest Messenger — Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), whose message, character, and miracles made his truthfulness evident and unmistakable.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah addresses the disbelievers who rejected the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: "Why was this Qur'an not sent down upon some great man from the two cities?" (43:31). They questioned the choice of the Messenger, as if they deserved better or as if they had been deprived of something.

Allah responds by saying: "Nay, but I gave enjoyment to these people and their fathers..." — meaning, I did not hasten their punishment despite their disbelief and arrogance. Instead, I granted them a long life of ease, wealth, health, and worldly pleasures — both to them and to their forefathers before them — as a test and a sign of My patience and mercy. I did not seize them immediately for their sins, giving them ample time to reflect and return to the truth.

"...until the truth came to them and a clear Messenger." — This means that all this respite and enjoyment continued until the moment when the ultimate truth — the Qur'an — was revealed to them, and a Messenger whose message was clear, whose proofs were evident, and whose call was unambiguous was sent to them. That Messenger is Muhammad (peace be upon him), who came with a Book that guides to all that is good and warns against all that is evil.

So the verse carries a profound lesson: the very blessings and delays in punishment that the disbelievers enjoyed were not a sign of Allah's approval of their ways, but rather a manifestation of His forbearance and an opportunity for them to wake up before it was too late. When the truth finally arrived, they had no excuse left — the proof was established, and the responsibility was upon them to respond.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the immense mercy of your Lord. He gives you life, health, sustenance, and countless blessings — not because He needs you, but because He loves to give and He loves to forgive. He delays your punishment, not out of neglect, but to give you the chance to turn back to Him. When the truth reaches you — through the Qur'an, through sincere advice, or through the beauty of Islam — do not turn away. This is your moment. This is your opportunity. Allah has sent you a clear Messenger and a clear Book so that you may walk the path of light. Embrace it before the respite ends, and let your heart respond to the call of truth with love, submission, and gratitude. Indeed, the One who granted you all these blessings is the One who deserves your worship and your obedience.

Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."
And he made it a word remaining among his descendants that they might return [to it].
However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.
But when the truth came to them, they said, "This is magic, and indeed we are, concerning it, disbelievers."
And they said, "Why was this Qur'an not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two cities?"
