Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yaqsimoona – They divide or apportion.
- Ma'eeshatahum – Their livelihood, means of subsistence.
- Sukhriyyan – Subservient, employed in service of one another.
- Rahmatu Rabbika – The mercy of your Lord, which here refers to prophethood and, in a broader sense, the eternal bliss of Paradise.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah rebukes those who question His divine wisdom in selecting His messengers, asking: "Do they distribute the mercy of your Lord?" That is, do they have the authority to decide who receives prophethood and who does not? How could they, when they cannot even manage their own affairs?
Allah then reminds them of His absolute sovereignty and wisdom: "We have distributed their livelihood among them in the worldly life." It is He alone who determines who is rich and who is poor, who is strong and who is weak. He has raised some above others in ranks and degrees — not out of favoritism or injustice, but as a deliberate design: "so that some may take others in service." This means that the rich employ the poor, the strong serve the weak, and thus the affairs of the world are woven together in a fabric of mutual need and cooperation. No one is self-sufficient; everyone depends on others, and this interdependence is itself a sign of Allah's mercy and wisdom.
Then comes the profound conclusion: "But the mercy of your Lord is better than what they accumulate." The mercy of Allah — which includes prophethood, guidance, and ultimately the everlasting bliss of Paradise — is far superior to all the worldly wealth and treasures they gather. What they hoard is fleeting, perishable, and leaves them empty-handed in the Hereafter, while the mercy of Allah is eternal and never diminishes.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the perfection of Allah's arrangement. The One who precisely distributes daily bread among billions of creatures — from the smallest ant to the mightiest king — is surely capable of choosing the best among His servants to carry His message. When you see the poor and the rich, the employer and the employee, the ruler and the ruled, know that this is not random chaos, but a divine order that keeps the world functioning.
And when you feel attached to the glitter of this world, remember that the greatest treasure is not in your bank account, but in your heart's connection to your Creator. The mercy of Allah — His guidance, His forgiveness, His Paradise — is the true wealth that never perishes. So strive for it, seek it, and let not the temporary comforts of this life distract you from the everlasting reward that awaits those who believe and do good. Indeed, the best investment you can ever make is in the currency of the Hereafter.
