Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- S(u)qufan (سُقُفًا): Ceilings or roofs of houses.
- Ma‘ārij (مَعَارِجَ): Stairways, ladders, or steps used to ascend.
- Yaẓharūn (يَظْهَرُونَ): They ascend or climb up to the top.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals the profound wisdom behind why Allah does not grant excessive worldly wealth and luxury to everyone, especially to those who disbelieve in Him. Allah says: "Were it not that mankind would become one community [of disbelievers], We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful—for their houses—ceilings of silver and stairways upon which they ascend."
The meaning is that if Allah had given the disbelievers all the silver and gold they desired—turning their very homes into palaces with silver roofs and silver staircases—then people, in their love for the fleeting pleasures of this world, would have been drawn to disbelief in masses. They would have thought that such wealth signified divine favor and truth, and thus they would have rushed to join the disbelievers, making the whole of humanity one united nation upon kufr (disbelief).
So, Allah withholds such worldly luxuries from the disbelievers as a mercy to humanity, so that people may not be deceived by outward appearances and turn away from the truth. This also demonstrates that this worldly life holds no real value in Allah’s sight—otherwise, He would have given its abundance to His enemies, just as He gives the Hereafter’s everlasting bliss to His beloved servants.
Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the greatness of Allah’s wisdom and His care for His creation. He knows that the human heart is easily captivated by glitter and gold, and so He protects us from being misled by the temporary riches of this world. The true treasure is not in silver roofs or golden staircases, but in the peace of faith and the eternal gardens of Paradise, where the least of its dwellers will have what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever imagined.
So do not envy those who possess worldly wealth while lacking faith, for their luxury is but a fleeting illusion. Instead, strive for what is with Allah—for that is better and more lasting. And know that Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made the path to Him clear and easy, and He has promised His believing servants a reward beyond measure. Let this verse increase your gratitude for the guidance of Islam, and let it strengthen your trust in Allah’s perfect wisdom in all that He gives and withholds.
