Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āyāt (الْآيَاتِ): Signs, miracles, and divine proofs.
- Balā’un mubīn (بَلَاءٌ مُّبِينٌ): A clear trial or test — a manifest ordeal that distinguishes the obedient from the disobedient.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah reminds us of His immense favour upon the Children of Israel when He sent Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) with extraordinary miracles. These signs were not random wonders; they were purposeful, divinely designed tests. Among them were the splitting of the sea, the shade of clouds in the desert, the provision of manna and quails, and water gushing from rocks — all clear evidences of Allah’s power and mercy.
The phrase "balā’un mubīn" (a clear trial) carries a profound meaning: every blessing and every miracle was a test. Would they believe and be grateful? Or would they persist in disbelief and arrogance? The ease of manna and quails tested their patience and gratitude, while the terror of the sea and the pursuit of Pharaoh tested their trust in Allah. Thus, the signs were both a mercy and a challenge — a means to purify their faith and reveal their true character.
This teaches us that trials in life are not always hardships; they can also be blessings that test our hearts. Allah gives us signs every day — in the rising of the sun, the rain that revives the earth, the breath in our lungs — and each is a clear trial: Will we remember Him, or will we turn away? The believer sees every moment as an opportunity to grow closer to Allah, while the heedless one passes by without reflection.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, look around you with the eyes of faith. The universe itself is a book of signs, and every blessing you enjoy is a test of your gratitude. When you witness the wonders of creation, let your heart soften and your tongue utter: "Our Lord, You have not created this without purpose." The greatest success lies not in escaping trials, but in passing them with patience, gratitude, and unwavering trust in Allah. For He who tested the nations before us with clear signs is the same Lord who tests us today — and His promise of reward for the steadfast is greater than any hardship we may face.
