Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Inna haa’ulaa’ — Indeed, these [people]; referring to the disbelieving polytheists of Quraysh in Makkah.
- La-yaqooloon — They certainly say; meaning they persistently utter and insist upon their statement.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse points to the stubborn denial of the polytheists among the Quraysh when they were told about the reality of death and the resurrection that follows it. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) conveyed to them the message of the Hereafter — that they would die and then be brought back to life for accountability — they responded with rejection and mockery. They said: “There is nothing beyond this life except our first death; we will not be resurrected after we die.” Their words were not based on any knowledge or proof, but rather on blind arrogance and a refusal to submit to the truth.
These people — despite witnessing the signs of Allah’s power in creation, in the alternation of night and day, in the life and death of all beings — still insisted on denying the inevitable. They closed their hearts to the clear evidence and chose instead to follow their desires and the whispers of their leaders.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: How can a person witness the countless resurrections happening around them every single day — the dead earth coming to life with green vegetation after rain, the seed breaking open to sprout into a tree, the cycle of sleep and wakefulness — and then deny that the Creator who does all this is able to bring the dead back to life? The One who created you from nothing is certainly able to recreate you after death. This is not a matter of difficulty for Him; it is as easy as His command “Be” — and it is.
The Quran repeatedly invites you to use your intellect, to look at the universe with contemplating eyes, and to realize that this worldly life is not the end. There is a greater purpose, a final destination where every soul will meet its Lord. Do not be like those who said with arrogance, “We will not be resurrected,” for they only harmed themselves. Instead, be among those who respond to the call of truth, who prepare for the meeting with their Lord, and who find peace in the certainty of the Hereafter. That is the path of success, both in this life and in the life to come.
