Word Meanings:

  • مِّن وَرَائِهِمْ – "From behind them" or "ahead of them"; in this context, it means before them, i.e., awaiting them in the Hereafter.
  • جَهَنَّمُ – Hellfire; the blazing Fire prepared for the disbelievers.
  • لَا يُغْنِي – Will not avail, benefit, or protect in any way.
  • مَا كَسَبُوا – What they earned or acquired, such as wealth, children, and worldly gains.
  • مَا اتَّخَذُوا مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ أَوْلِيَاءَ – The false deities, idols, or beings they took as protectors and objects of worship besides Allah.
  • عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ – A severe, painful, and overwhelming punishment.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a vivid and sobering picture of the fate that awaits those who mock the signs of Allah and persist in their disbelief. Allah informs us that Hellfire lies directly ahead of them—not merely behind, but before their very eyes, as the destination they are marching toward in the Hereafter. The word "behind" here is used in the sense of "ahead," meaning that no matter which way they turn, the Fire is their inevitable end.

Then Allah addresses the false securities that such people cling to in this worldly life. He declares that nothing they have earned will benefit them in the least—neither their accumulated wealth, nor their children, nor their status, nor any worldly achievement. All of these, which they once took pride in and relied upon, will be utterly useless on that Day. They will not be able to ransom themselves with them, nor will these things shield them from even a moment of the punishment.

Furthermore, Allah mentions the false protectors they took besides Him—the idols, statues, or beings they worshipped and turned to for help and intercession. These false deities, which they hoped would intercede for them or save them from harm, will also fail them completely. They cannot defend them, cannot speak for them, and cannot alter their fate in any way. This is a powerful reminder that anything we place our trust in besides Allah—whether wealth, power, people, or false gods—will inevitably disappoint us when we need it most.

Finally, the verse concludes with the chilling statement: "And for them is a great punishment." This is not just any punishment; it is a severe, overwhelming, and everlasting torment that they will not be able to bear or escape. The magnitude of this punishment is beyond human comprehension, and it is the direct consequence of their arrogance, mockery, and rejection of the truth.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a wake-up call for every soul. It reminds us that this worldly life, with all its attractions and achievements, is fleeting and deceptive. How many people today place their entire trust in their bank accounts, their careers, their families, or their social status, believing these will secure their happiness and future? Yet, on the Day of Judgment, all of these will be stripped away, and only our deeds and our relationship with Allah will matter.

The message is clear: Do not let the temporary pleasures of this world blind you to the eternal reality of the Hereafter. Turn to Allah sincerely, worship Him alone, and place your trust in Him above all else. He is the Only One who can truly protect you, guide you, and grant you success in this life and the next. The door of repentance is open, and His mercy is vast—so do not delay. Seek His forgiveness, follow His guidance, and strive to be among those who will be saved from this great punishment and admitted into His eternal Paradise.

It is Allah who subjected to you the sea so that ships may sail upon it by His command and that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful.
