Word Meanings:
- Āyātī (آيَاتِي): My signs, verses, and proofs — the revelations sent down through the messengers.
- Tutlā (تُتْلَىٰ): Were recited and conveyed to you.
- Fastakbartum (فَاسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ): You showed arrogance and pride, refusing to submit.
- Mujrimīn (مُجْرِمِينَ): Criminals — those who persist in disbelief, sin, and transgression.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers are brought forth, they will be rebuked and reproached with a question that cuts to their very core: *"Were not My verses recited to you?"* This is not a question seeking information — Allah knows all — but a piercing, humiliating reminder of the truth they turned away from. The messengers came, the Qur’an was revealed, and the signs of Allah were proclaimed clearly and repeatedly. Yet, instead of listening with humility and responding with faith, they swelled with pride. Their arrogance prevented them from bowing to the truth, and they deemed themselves too great to follow the guidance.
Then comes the second charge: *"And you were a people of criminals."* Their crime was not merely disbelief — it was a persistent, deliberate lifestyle of sin and transgression. They rejected the messengers, denied the resurrection, mocked the truth, and persisted in wrongdoing without any fear of accountability. They lived as if there were no Hereafter, no reckoning, and no consequences.
This verse serves as a powerful warning: the Qur’an and the message of Islam reach every soul in every era. No one will be able to claim ignorance on that Day. The question will be: What did you do with the truth when it came to you? Did you accept it with humility, or did your pride lead you to reject it?
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is not only for the disbelievers of the past — it is a timeless reminder for all of us. The Qur’an is being recited to you right now, in this very moment. The signs of Allah are all around you: in the heavens, in the earth, in your own creation. The question is: How do you respond? Do you approach the Qur’an with an open heart, seeking guidance and submitting to its commands? Or does pride, habit, or worldly distraction keep you away?
Islam invites you to a life of peace, purpose, and eternal success. The door of repentance is open until the final hour. Do not let arrogance — the very trait that destroyed Iblis — be the reason you lose the greatest treasure: the pleasure of Allah and the gardens of Paradise. Humble yourself before your Creator, embrace His message, and you will find a light that illuminates your path in this world and the next.
