Word Meanings:

  • Al-Sa'ah (الساعة): The Hour—the Day of Resurrection and Judgment.
  • Rayb (ريب): Doubt, uncertainty, or suspicion.
  • Zann (ظن): A weak conjecture, guess, or mere assumption—not certain knowledge.
  • Mustayqinin (مستيقنين): Those who are fully certain, convinced, and assured of something.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses the disbelievers and their response when they were reminded of the truth. When they were told, "Indeed, Allah's promise is true, and the Hour—there is no doubt about it," they responded with arrogance and ignorance: "We do not know what the Hour is. We only assume it might happen, but we are not certain."

Their words reveal a deep spiritual sickness—a refusal to accept the truth despite clear evidence. They did not outright deny the Hour, but they treated it as a distant possibility, a mere guess, rather than a certainty that demands preparation. This is the hallmark of those who live heedless of the Hereafter: they do not engage with the truth, they simply dismiss it with weak excuses.

Notice how they said, "We do not know what the Hour is." This is not a genuine admission of ignorance seeking knowledge; rather, it is a dismissive statement meant to avoid responsibility. If they truly wanted to know, they would have asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) and reflected on the signs. But their hearts were sealed, and their minds were closed.

Their statement, "We only assume it might happen," shows that even their acknowledgment of the possibility was weak and hesitant. They did not say, "It will happen," nor did they say, "It will not happen." They remained in a state of ambiguity, refusing to commit to the truth. And finally, they admitted, "We are not certain," which is an admission of their own spiritual blindness.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder for us today. How often do we treat the Hereafter as a distant reality, something we "believe in" but do not truly live by? How often do we postpone our repentance, our good deeds, and our preparation for the Day of Judgment, as if it were a mere possibility rather than an absolute certainty?

The believer, in contrast, is described in the Quran as one who is certain (muqin) about the Hereafter. This certainty transforms their life—it makes them prioritize what truly matters, it makes them cautious of sin, and it makes them eager for good deeds. The disbelievers' uncertainty was not due to lack of evidence; it was due to their love of this world and their unwillingness to change.

Dear reader, do not be like those who said, "We do not know." The signs of the Hour are all around you—the Prophet (peace be upon him) has informed us of them, the Quran has described them, and your own heart knows the truth. Embrace certainty. Let your faith be firm, not shaky. Let your deeds be abundant, not scarce. For the Hour will come, and on that Day, every soul will be recompensed for what it has earned. Do not let yourself be among those who only "assume" and "guess" about the greatest reality of all. Be among those who are certain, for certainty is the path to success in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 30-34 — Al-Jathiyah

So as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is what is the clear attainment.
But as for those who disbelieved, [it will be said], "Were not Our verses recited to you, but you were arrogant and became a people of criminals?
And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth and the Hour [is coming] - no doubt about it,' you said, 'We know not what is the Hour. We assume only assumption, and we are not convinced.' "
And the evil consequences of what they did will appear to them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
And it will be said, "Today We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours, and your refuge is the Fire, and for you there are no helpers.
