Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse carries a profound message of reassurance and warning, revealed in a context where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had been forced to leave his beloved city of Makkah due to the relentless persecution of its people. Allah addresses His Messenger with a powerful rhetorical question that shakes the heart: "How many towns were far stronger in might, wealth, and numbers than your town which drove you out?"

The answer is: countless. Many previous civilizations possessed far greater power, more fortified cities, larger armies, and abundant resources. They seemed invincible in the eyes of their contemporaries. Yet, when they rejected the messengers of Allah and persisted in their arrogance and oppression, Allah destroyed them completely. Their strength availed them nothing, their fortifications crumbled, their wealth vanished, and their armies scattered. When the decree of Allah came, there was not a single helper, protector, or savior for them — no ally, no deity, no power on earth could shield them from His justice.

The lesson here is twofold. First, it is a direct comfort to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the believers: do not be intimidated by the apparent power of your enemies. The Quraysh of Makkah, despite their strength and resources, are weaker than many nations that came before them — nations that were utterly destroyed when they opposed Allah's messengers. If Allah could wipe out those mighty civilizations, then He is certainly capable of dealing with the oppressors of Makkah whenever He wills.

Second, it is a stern warning to the disbelievers: do not be deceived by your temporary power and prosperity. The same fate that befell those stronger than you will befall you if you continue on your path of rejection and hostility. No one will be able to rescue you from Allah's punishment.

This verse also teaches us a timeless principle: true power belongs to Allah alone. Human strength, wealth, and numbers are fleeting and illusory. The mighty nations of the past are now nothing but lessons in history — their monuments in ruins, their names barely remembered. But the word of Allah endures, and His justice is inevitable.

For the believer, this verse instills profound trust in Allah. When you face opposition, persecution, or feel overwhelmed by the forces of falsehood, remember that Allah is the All-Powerful, and He has never failed to support His righteous servants. The oppressors may seem strong today, but their end is already written in the same book of divine justice that recorded the destruction of every tyrant before them.

Let this verse be a source of strength and patience for every Muslim who faces hardship for the sake of their faith. Your enemies, no matter how mighty they appear, are weaker than those whom Allah has already destroyed. Place your trust in Allah, remain steadfast, and know that victory belongs to those who are patient and God-conscious.

📜 Verse 11-15 — Muhammad

That is because Allah is the protector of those who have believed and because the disbelievers have no protector.
Indeed, Allah will admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow, but those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as grazing livestock eat, and the Fire will be a residence for them.
And how many a city was stronger than your city [Makkah] which drove you out? We destroyed them; and there was no helper for them.
So is he who is on clear evidence from his Lord like him to whom the evil of his work has been made attractive and they follow their [own] desires?
Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?
