Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Ahl al-Injeel (أهل الإنجيل): The People of the Gospel — the followers of Prophet Jesus (Isa), peace be upon him, i.e., the Christians of that time.
- Yahkum (يَحْكُم): To judge, rule, or decide according to a given law or revelation.
- Fasiqoon (الفاسقون): Those who deviate from obedience to Allah, who transgress His commands and turn away from the truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse addresses the followers of the Gospel — the Christians — commanding them to judge by what Allah revealed in the Gospel during the time when it was the prevailing divine law, before the advent of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Gospel contained guidance, light, and clear rulings that affirmed the truth of monotheism, righteous conduct, and the coming of the final Messenger. They were obligated to implement its teachings sincerely and to submit to its authority in their lives.
The verse then delivers a stern warning: whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed — whether from the Gospel, the Torah, or the Quran — such people are the true *fasiqoon*, those who have stepped outside the bounds of obedience to their Lord. They have abandoned the path of truth and inclined toward falsehood, rebellion, and their own desires. This is not merely a historical statement; it is a timeless principle. Allah’s judgment is the ultimate standard of justice, and turning away from it in any era is a mark of spiritual corruption and moral failure.
This verse also teaches us that the Gospel was a complete and independent divine law for its time, and that the coming of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) abrogated the earlier laws, making the Quran the final and universal constitution for all of humanity until the Day of Judgment.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of Allah’s justice. He did not leave humanity without guidance — He sent messengers, revealed books, and set clear laws for every nation. The command to judge by His revelation is a mercy, not a restriction, because His laws are built on perfect wisdom and absolute fairness. When we turn to His guidance, we find peace, order, and success in this life and the next. When we abandon it, we fall into chaos, oppression, and loss.
Today, the Quran is our living miracle and our complete constitution. It addresses every aspect of life — from worship to transactions, from personal conduct to social justice. Let us honor it not only by reciting its verses but by making it the judge of our affairs, the light of our hearts, and the compass of our actions. Whoever holds firmly to what Allah has revealed will never be led astray, and whoever turns away from it will find nothing but regret. Embrace this divine guidance with sincerity, and you will taste the sweetness of faith and the security of being under Allah’s care.
