Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿĀd: The ancient tribe of ʿĀd, to whom the Prophet Hūd was sent. They were known for their immense physical strength and arrogance.
  • al-Rīḥ al-ʿAqīm: Literally "the barren wind" — a wind that carries no rain, no pollination, and no benefit whatsoever. It is destructive and devoid of all good.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In the story of the people of ʿĀd lies a profound sign for those who reflect and fear the painful punishment of Allah. When they rejected the message of their Prophet Hūd and persisted in their tyranny and arrogance, Allah sent upon them a wind unlike any other — a wind described as *ʿaqīm*, meaning barren and fruitless. It was not a wind that brought clouds heavy with rain, nor did it pollinate trees or carry any trace of mercy or blessing. Rather, it was a wind of pure destruction, carrying nothing but ruin in its path.

This wind was relentless. It did not spare anything it touched — it tore through their lands, their homes, and their very lives, leaving everything as if it had been decayed and crumbled to dust. It was a punishment that matched their crime: just as they had turned away from the truth and spread corruption, so too was this wind sent to erase them completely, leaving no trace of their former glory.

The lesson here is timeless. The people of ʿĀd were mighty and powerful, yet their strength could not protect them from the decree of Allah. When a people turn away from their Creator and reject His messengers, no amount of worldly power can save them. This verse calls upon every believer to reflect: where is the power of ʿĀd today? Where are their towering structures and their boastful pride? All of it was swept away by a single command from Allah — a wind that was barren of all good, yet full of divine justice.

For us, this is a reminder of Allah’s absolute control over all things. It is also an invitation to humility — to recognize that our strength, our wealth, and our achievements are all gifts from Allah, and that we must use them in obedience to Him, not in arrogance against Him. The Qur’an repeatedly presents these stories not merely as history, but as living lessons for those who have hearts to understand and eyes to see. Let us take heed, and let us turn to Allah with sincerity before the winds of His punishment arrive — for His mercy is vast for those who repent, but His justice is swift for those who persist in wrongdoing.

📜 Verse 39-43 — Adh-Dhariyat

But he turned away with his supporters and said," A magician or a madman."
So We took him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.
And in 'Aad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind.
It left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.
And in Thamud, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."
