Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Jinn (الْجِنَّ): The jinn — created beings made from smokeless fire, unseen to humans, possessing intellect and free will like humans.
- Al-Ins (الْإِنسَ): Humankind — the children of Adam, created from clay.
- Li-ya'budūn (لِيَعْبُدُونِ): So that they worship Me — meaning to devote themselves exclusively to the worship of Allah alone, in obedience, love, and submission.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound and majestic verse, Allah — the Most High — declares the ultimate purpose of creation itself: "And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me."
This is not merely a statement of fact; it is the very essence of existence. Allah did not create these two creations — the jinn and humans — for any trivial or random reason. He created them for the noblest and highest purpose: to know Him, to worship Him alone, and to submit to His will with sincerity and devotion.
The word "worship" (ʿibādah) here encompasses far more than ritual acts like prayer and fasting. It includes every action, word, and thought that is done in obedience to Allah and in pursuit of His pleasure — from the way we eat and sleep, to how we treat our parents, to how we conduct our business and deal with others. When a believer lives their entire life according to Allah's guidance, every moment becomes an act of worship.
It is important to understand that this worship is not because Allah needs it. He is completely self-sufficient and free of all needs. Rather, worship is a mercy from Allah to His creation — it is the path that purifies the soul, brings peace to the heart, and leads to eternal success in the Hereafter. Through worship, the servant draws closer to their Creator and finds true meaning and purpose in life.
The verse also clarifies that Allah did not create us to associate partners with Him or to worship anything besides Him. The purpose is pure and singular: to worship Allah alone, without any partner, rival, or intermediary.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this beautiful verse. You were not created by accident, nor are you here by chance. Your existence has a divine purpose — a purpose that gives meaning to every breath you take and every step you make.
When you wake up in the morning and remember Allah, when you work with honesty and integrity, when you show kindness to others, when you pray and fast and give charity — you are fulfilling the very reason for which you were brought into existence. This is not a burden; it is a gift. It is the key to true happiness in this life and eternal bliss in the next.
So ask yourself: Am I living according to the purpose for which I was created? Am I worshipping my Lord as He deserves? The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Return to your Lord, and you will find peace that nothing in this world can give you. Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.
