Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Kulū (كُلُوا): Eat — a command of honor and generosity.
  • Wa-ishrabū (وَاشْرَبُوا): And drink — likewise, a command of hospitality.
  • Hanī’an (هَنِيئًا): Wholesome, pleasant, free from any harm, discomfort, or aftereffect — pure enjoyment without any trace of trouble.
  • Bimā kuntum ta‘malūn (بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ): Because of what you used to do — the “ba’” here indicates causation, not exchange, meaning this is a reward from Allah’s grace for their deeds, not a purchase price.

Explanation of the Verse:

On that glorious Day, as the believers recline on lined-up couches facing one another in the gardens of Paradise, they are welcomed with a divine, gracious call: “Eat and drink in pure delight and total well-being!” This is not merely an invitation to food and drink — it is a declaration of perfect peace. What they consume causes no harm, no sickness, no satiety that pains, and no regret. It is pure, untainted bliss — a happiness that never fades and a pleasure that never ends.

This generous hospitality is presented as the fruit of their own deeds — yet we must understand this correctly. It is not that they “bought” Paradise with their works, for no one enters Paradise by their deeds alone, but rather by the mercy and grace of Allah. Their righteous actions — prayer, charity, patience, truthfulness, and devotion — were the means and the path that Allah, in His infinite kindness, honored and rewarded with this everlasting delight. The verse gently reminds us that every good deed we do in this world, however small, is cherished by Allah and will return to us as joy in the Hereafter.

A Call to the Heart:

Dear reader, imagine this scene: you have crossed the bridge of trials, and now you are seated in a garden where rivers flow beneath you, where no worry touches your soul, and where the Lord of the Worlds Himself welcomes you with the words: “Eat and drink in peace!” This is not a distant dream — it is a promise from the One who never breaks His word. Every prayer you offer, every kind word you speak, every honest transaction you make, every tear you shed in repentance — all of it is being stored for you as a banquet of joy. So let this verse ignite your hope and renew your resolve: your efforts are not lost, your patience is not wasted, and your Lord sees every step you take toward Him. Paradise is real, and its doors are open for those who strive — so strive, and taste the sweetness of faith today, that you may taste the everlasting sweetness tomorrow.
