So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ālā’ (آلاء): The countless blessings, favors, and bounties of Allah.
  • Tukadhdhibān (تُكَذِّبَانِ): You both deny or reject (addressed to both humans and jinn).

Tafsir (Explanation):

O mankind and jinn, Allah addresses you both directly with a question that strikes at the heart of gratitude: "So which of the blessings of your Lord do you both deny?" This verse is a recurring refrain throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, repeated to awaken the conscience of both creations. It reminds us that every breath you take, every beat of your heart, the sun that rises and sets, the rain that falls, the food that sustains you, the very ability to hear and see and think—all of these are blessings from your Lord. None of them can be repaid, and none of them should be denied.

The question is rhetorical, meant to make you pause and reflect: How could you possibly deny even one of these favors? The blessings are so numerous that they cannot be counted, and yet some people still turn away in ingratitude, worshipping other than Allah or disobeying His commands. The verse is a gentle but powerful rebuke, inviting you to recognize the truth and submit to the One who has given you everything.

A Da’wah Reflection:

Dear reader, imagine if someone gave you a gift every single moment of your life—food when you are hungry, water when you are thirsty, safety when you are afraid, and guidance when you are lost. Would you ever deny their kindness? Would you ever thank them? Allah, your Lord, is the One who does this and more, without you even asking. He has given you Islam as the greatest blessing of all—a path to peace in this life and eternal happiness in the next. So do not be among those who deny His favors. Open your heart, say "Alhamdulillah" (all praise is due to Allah), and let this verse be a turning point where you embrace His mercy and live a life of gratitude. For the One who blessed you with everything is worthy of your love, your obedience, and your worship.
