Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Mīthāqakum" (مِيثَاقَكُمْ): The solemn covenant and binding pledge that Allah took from humanity.
- "Tū'minūn" (تُؤْمِنُونَ): To believe with sincere conviction, encompassing faith in the heart, affirmation by the tongue, and action upon the limbs.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse gently but powerfully reproaches those who hesitate to embrace faith, asking: What is your excuse for not believing in Allah? What could possibly hold you back from the truth when the means and evidence are so clear before you?
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is standing among you, calling you with his words, his character, and his very presence to believe in your Lord. He is not asking you for a favour—he is inviting you to the very purpose of your existence, to the path that leads to your salvation and eternal happiness. His call is a living proof, a mercy that Allah sent to guide you out of darkness into light.
Moreover, this is not something foreign to your nature. Allah took a covenant from you—from all of humanity—when He brought forth the offspring of Adam from their loins and made them testify over themselves: "Am I not your Lord?" They all answered: "Yes, we bear witness." So faith is embedded in your original disposition (fitrah); you were created upon it, and your very nature testifies to His oneness.
The verse ends with a subtle, stirring condition: "if you are believers." This is not a doubt about their faith, but rather an awakening—a reminder that if you truly are people of faith, you must live up to that covenant and respond to the call that has reached you. It is as if Allah is saying: You have already pledged this in the beginning; now fulfil it in the present.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause for a moment. The Messenger is no longer physically among us, but his call remains alive in the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Every verse you read, every hadith you hear, is an extension of that same invitation. The covenant is still upon you. Your fitrah still whispers the truth. So what is stopping you from answering? Is it doubt? Is it worldly distraction? Is it fear of change?
Know that faith is not a burden—it is a liberation. It frees you from the anxiety of a purposeless life, from the fear of death and the unknown, from the slavery of desires and the whims of society. It connects you to the Most Merciful, who loves you more than a mother loves her child. It gives you a mission, a direction, and a hope that transcends this fleeting world.
Do not let Shaytan deceive you into thinking that you have time, or that your sins are too great, or that faith is too difficult. The door of repentance is open, and the call is still sounding. Answer it today, with a sincere heart, and you will find a peace that nothing in this world can match. For Allah has promised: "Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest" (13:28).
