The Tafsir (Explanation):
Have you not realized, O noble Messenger, and has it not become clear to you, that Allah’s knowledge encompasses everything in the heavens and everything on the earth? Nothing escapes Him—not a single atom, not a single movement, not a single thought.
Consider this profound truth: when three people sit together in a secret, whispered conversation, Allah is the fourth among them—not in person, but in His complete and encompassing knowledge. He hears every word, knows every intention, and is fully aware of every detail. When five people confide in each other, He is the sixth. And whether the number is fewer than that or greater, He is with them wherever they may be—in the depths of the ocean, in the vastness of the desert, behind closed doors, or in the darkness of the night. No place can hide them from His knowledge, and no secrecy can veil their words from His hearing.
This is not merely a statement of surveillance to instil fear; it is a declaration of divine intimacy and care. Allah, the Most Merciful, is so close to His creation that He knows even their most private moments. For the believer, this is a source of immense comfort—knowing that when you whisper a prayer, He hears it; when you share a burden with a trusted friend, He is aware of your need; when you struggle silently, He knows your pain. You are never alone.
Then, on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will inform them of everything they did—every word spoken in secret, every deed performed in private, whether good or evil. Nothing will be lost or forgotten. He will lay it all bare and reward or punish accordingly, with perfect justice and wisdom.
Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of everything. His knowledge is not limited by time, place, or circumstance. He knows what was, what is, and what will be, and nothing is hidden from Him—not even the blink of an eye or the whisper of a heart.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. If Allah is with you in your most private moments, then know that you are never truly alone. Let this knowledge fill you with hope when you are in distress, and let it restrain you from sin when you are tempted in secret. For the One who sees you in the darkness of the night is the same One who will honour you in the light of the Hereafter. Turn to Him, speak to Him, and trust that He hears every word you utter—even the ones you say to yourself. And remember: the secrets you keep from people are never hidden from Him, so make your secret conversations with Him the most beautiful ones, filled with repentance, gratitude, and love.
