Explanation of the Verse:
This verse reveals a profound truth about the enemies of faith—their weakness and internal fragmentation. Allah tells the believers that the hypocrites and the People of the Book (specifically the Jews of that time) will never face you in open, united combat. They only fight from behind fortified walls, within protected towns, or from behind barriers—never in a fair, face-to-face confrontation. This is because their courage is hollow and their hearts are filled with fear of the believers.
Yet, despite their apparent unity when they gather, their mutual hostility is intense. If you were to look at them, you might think they are one solid block, standing together with a single purpose. But in reality, their hearts are utterly divided, torn by suspicion, envy, and conflicting interests. They are like a building whose exterior looks strong, but whose foundation is cracked and crumbling.
Why is this so? Because they are a people who do not use their intellect to grasp the truth. Had they reflected upon Allah's signs and His commandments, they would have recognized the truth of Islam and submitted to it. Instead, their lack of sound reasoning leaves them in a state of perpetual discord and weakness, even when they appear strong.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for the believers: never be intimidated by the apparent strength or numbers of the enemy. Their unity is an illusion, their power is fragile, and their hearts are divided. Trust in Allah, who knows their inner reality, and place your reliance on Him alone. For the believers, true strength lies not in walls or weapons, but in faith, unity, and the consciousness of Allah.
A Call to Reflection:
How beautiful is the Quran in unveiling the hidden realities of human hearts! It teaches us that the might of nations and armies is but a shadow, while the true power belongs to Allah, who turns the hearts of people as He wills. Let this verse strengthen your resolve: if you stand firm upon the truth, with sincere faith and unity among yourselves, no force on earth can overcome you. And let it also be a reminder to seek knowledge and understanding, for the lack of intellect and reflection is what leads people—and nations—into division and ruin.
