Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- رهبة (Rahbah): Fear, dread, or terror that causes one to be on guard.
- يفقهون (Yafqahūn): They comprehend, understand, or grasp the true reality of something.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, this verse addresses a profound psychological reality about the hypocrites and those who harbor hostility toward you. Allah informs you that the fear and dread they feel toward you is far greater and more intense than any fear they have of Allah Himself. Their hearts tremble at the thought of your strength, your unity, and your resolve—while the majesty of Allah, His power, and His punishment barely register in their consciousness.
This is a remarkable statement, for it reveals the distorted nature of their perception. They see you—mere human beings—as a greater threat than the Creator of the heavens and the earth. They panic at your presence, yet they remain unmoved by the thought of standing before Allah on the Day of Judgment. They dread your swords, but they do not dread His wrath.
Why is this so? The verse concludes with the reason: "That is because they are a people who do not comprehend." They lack true understanding and insight. Had they possessed even a spark of genuine comprehension, they would have realized that Allah is far more deserving of fear and reverence. He is the One who holds their destinies in His Hands, the One who grants victory and defeat, the One who has empowered you over them. Their failure to grasp this reality is a sign of their spiritual blindness and intellectual bankruptcy.
Reflect, dear believer, on the immense honor Allah has bestowed upon you. He has placed awe and reverence for you in the hearts of your enemies—not because of your own might, but as a manifestation of His support for His righteous servants. This is a divine gift that should fill your heart with gratitude and humility. When you see the enemies of Islam trembling before you, know that it is Allah who has cast that fear into their hearts, just as He did for His Prophet ﷺ and the early Muslims.
Let this verse also be a reminder to you: if the hypocrites fear you more than they fear Allah, then what about your own heart? Where does your fear of Allah rank in your priorities? The believer who truly comprehends knows that Allah is the Most Deserving of fear, love, and reverence. When your heart is firmly anchored in consciousness of Allah, no enemy—no matter how powerful—can truly terrify you. For you know that all power belongs to Allah alone, and He is sufficient for you.
This verse carries a beautiful lesson in reliance upon Allah. Your strength does not lie in numbers or weaponry alone; it lies in your connection to the Almighty. When you are sincere in your faith, Allah places your awe in the hearts of your adversaries, and they are defeated before the battle even begins. So hold fast to your faith, strengthen your understanding of your Lord, and let your hearts be filled with hope and certainty in His promise of victory for the believers.
