Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Wabaal" (وبال): The evil consequence, harmful outcome, or bitter result of a matter.
- "Ameerihim" (أمرهم): Their affair, referring to their disbelief, hostility, and opposition to the truth.
- "Aleen" (أليم): Painful, severe, and agonizing.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse draws a powerful and vivid comparison to awaken hearts and minds. Allah compares these Jewish tribes of Madinah—who broke their covenants and conspired against the Prophet (peace be upon him)—to those who came before them in the recent past. These were the disbelievers of Quraysh at the Battle of Badr, as well as the Jewish tribe of Banu Qaynuqa'.
Just as those earlier people tasted the bitter fruits of their own actions—suffering defeat, humiliation, death, and capture—so too did these people taste the evil consequences of their disbelief and hostility. Their plots turned against them, and their strength could not protect them from the punishment of Allah in this world.
Yet, the verse does not stop at the worldly punishment. It reminds us that beyond this fleeting life, there awaits an even more severe reality: a painful torment in the Hereafter. This is a warning that no one who opposes the truth and fights against Allah's messengers will ever escape accountability. The punishment in this world is but a glimpse; the ultimate justice is reserved for the eternal life to come.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation. It teaches us that history repeats itself for those who repeat the same errors. When people reject guidance, break their promises, and wage war against the truth, they inevitably bring ruin upon themselves. The fate of those before them stands as a living testimony—a sign for those who reflect.
Let this be a reminder of the mercy of Allah in sending warnings before punishment, and an invitation to turn back to Him before it is too late. For those who heed the warning, there is forgiveness and a beautiful reward. But for those who persist in arrogance and transgression, the end is always the same: regret in this world and painful punishment in the next.
May Allah protect us from the evil of our own actions and guide us to the straight path, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
