Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Ghayb (الْغَيْبِ): That which is hidden from the creation and cannot be perceived by the senses—the unseen, the unknown, and all that lies beyond human perception.
  • Al-Shahādah (الشَّهَادَةِ): That which is witnessed, seen, and known—the visible, observable world and all that is present before us.
  • Al-Raḥmān (الرَّحْمَٰنُ): The Most Merciful—the One whose mercy encompasses all of creation in this world and the next, without exception.
  • Al-Raḥīm (الرَّحِيمُ): The Especially Merciful—the One who bestows His mercy specifically upon the believers, guiding them and granting them His grace.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse is a magnificent declaration of the Oneness and Majesty of Allah, the Almighty. It opens with the profound truth: "He is Allah, the One who has no deity worthy of worship except Him." This is the foundation of the entire Islamic faith—the absolute, uncompromising monotheism that liberates the heart from servitude to anything other than the Creator. There is no god, no lord, no object of ultimate devotion except Allah alone. Every idol, every false deity, every desire that enslaves the soul—all are stripped of any right to worship.

Then Allah describes Himself as "the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed." Nothing escapes His knowledge. He knows the secrets hidden in the depths of hearts, the mysteries concealed behind the veils of the unseen, the whispers of the soul, and the events of the future that no creature can perceive. At the same time, He knows every visible action, every spoken word, every movement in the heavens and the earth. Not a leaf falls, not a breath is taken, not a thought crosses the mind—except that He is fully aware of it. This knowledge is not acquired or learned; it is inherent to His divine essence, eternal and perfect.

Finally, the verse concludes with the beautiful names: "He is the Most Merciful (Al-Raḥmān), the Especially Merciful (Al-Raḥīm)." His mercy is not a fleeting emotion but an all-encompassing attribute. As Al-Raḥmān, His mercy extends to every creature—believer and disbeliever, human and animal, the righteous and the wicked—providing for them, sustaining them, and showering them with blessings in this life. As Al-Raḥīm, His mercy is specially reserved for the believers, guiding them to faith, forgiving their sins, and granting them eternal bliss in Paradise.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, contemplate this verse deeply. The One who created you, who knows your every secret and your every public act, who sees your struggles and your joys—He is the same One whose mercy encompasses you at every moment. He knows what is hidden within your soul, your fears, your hopes, your sincere intentions. And despite His complete knowledge of your shortcomings, He still calls Himself Al-Raḥmān and Al-Raḥīm—the Merciful, the Compassionate.

This is your Lord. This is the God who invites you to know Him, to worship Him, and to draw near to Him. He does not need your worship; rather, you need His mercy. So turn to Him with a sincere heart, seek His forgiveness, and place your trust in His infinite knowledge and boundless mercy. For He who knows all and is merciful to all is truly worthy of your love, your devotion, and your complete submission. Let this verse be a light that illuminates your path and a reminder that no matter how far you have strayed, His mercy is always within reach.
