And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Those whom they invoke": The idols and false deities that the polytheists worship alongside Allah.
  • "Transgressively": In an aggressive, unjust, and insolent manner.
  • "Without knowledge": Out of sheer ignorance and foolishness, not based on any truth or understanding.
  • "We have adorned": We made their deeds appear attractive and pleasing to them.
  • "Their return": Their final destination and place of accountability.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O believers, Allah forbids you from insulting or reviling the false gods and idols that the polytheists worship, even though these objects are utterly worthless and deserve nothing but contempt. Why? Because such insults would provoke the polytheists—out of their ignorance and arrogance—to retaliate by cursing Allah Himself, the Lord of all worlds. They would do this not out of any knowledge or truth, but purely out of spite and transgression. So, to protect the honor of Allah and to close the door to such evil, you are commanded to refrain from attacking what they hold sacred, even if it is false.

This is a profound lesson in wisdom and manners: the believer must always consider the consequences of his words and actions. Sometimes, speaking the truth in a harsh manner can lead to an even greater evil, and Islam teaches us to choose the lesser harm and to prioritize the sanctity of Allah's name above all else.

Allah then says: "Thus have We adorned for every nation their deeds." Just as We made the polytheists' worship of idols and their obedience to Satan seem attractive to them—as a consequence of their own choice to reject the truth—so too do We leave every people to follow the path they have chosen for themselves, whether good or evil. This is a manifestation of divine justice: those who willingly embrace falsehood are left to sink deeper into it, while those who seek the truth are guided to it.

Finally, Allah reminds us that the end of all matters is with Him alone. Every soul will return to its Lord on the Day of Judgment, and He will inform them of all that they did in this world—every word, every action, every intention. Nothing will be hidden or forgotten. Then He will recompense them fully and justly for their deeds: the righteous with Paradise, and the wicked with Hellfire.

This verse carries a beautiful call to wisdom and self-restraint. It teaches us that even in the face of falsehood, we must conduct ourselves with dignity and foresight. Our goal is not to win arguments through insults, but to convey the truth with wisdom and beautiful preaching. And when people persist in their error, we leave their account to Allah, who is the Best of Judges. So let this be a reminder for every believer: guard your tongue, protect the honor of your Lord, and trust that Allah's justice will prevail in the end.

📜 Verse 106-110 — Al-An'am

Follow, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you from your Lord - there is no deity except Him - and turn away from those who associate others with Allah.
But if Allah had willed, they would not have associated. And We have not appointed you over them as a guardian, nor are you a manager over them.
And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.
And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths that if a sign came to them, they would surely believe in it. Say, "The signs are only with Allah." And what will make you perceive that even if a sign came, they would not believe.
And We will turn away their hearts and their eyes just as they refused to believe in it the first time. And We will leave them in their transgression, wandering blindly.
