Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Jahda aymanihim" (جَهْدَ أَيْمَانِهِمْ): Their most solemn and strenuous oaths, swearing with utmost sincerity and effort.
- "Ayatun" (آيَةٌ): A sign, miracle, or supernatural proof.
- "Ma yush'irukum" (مَا يُشْعِرُكُمْ): What makes you perceive or know? It implies a rhetorical question that makes the listener realize something they may not have considered.
- "La yu'minun" (لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ): They will not believe.
The Interpretation:
The polytheists of Quraysh, in their stubbornness and arrogance, swore by Allah with the most solemn and emphatic oaths that if a miraculous sign were to come to them—such as the ones they demanded, like turning the mountain of Safa into gold, reviving the dead, or sending down angels—they would most certainly believe in the message brought by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They made these promises not out of genuine desire for truth, but as a challenge and a test, thinking that such demands would never be met.
Allah, the Most High, instructed His Prophet (peace be upon him) to respond to them: "Say: The signs are only with Allah." This means that the coming of miracles is not in the Prophet's hands; it is solely Allah's prerogative. He sends signs and miracles according to His infinite wisdom, not according to the whims and demands of those who are merely seeking excuses to reject the truth. The Prophet's role is only to convey the message clearly, and the Qur'an itself is the greatest and most enduring miracle.
Then Allah turns to the believers, who sincerely wished for these signs to appear so that the disbelievers might be guided, and asks them a profound question: "What makes you realize that even if such signs were to come, they would still not believe?" This is a gentle yet powerful correction to the believers' hopes. It reveals that these people were not seeking truth; they were seeking excuses. Their hearts were sealed by their own arrogance and persistent rejection. Even if every miracle they demanded were to be shown to them, they would still not believe, because their problem was not a lack of evidence—it was a disease of the heart.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of us. It teaches us that guidance is not merely a matter of seeing signs or witnessing miracles; it is a matter of the heart's sincerity and openness to truth. Allah knows what is in the hearts of His creation, and He has already decreed who will believe and who will not. As believers, we should not be overly distressed by the rejection of others, nor should we pin our hopes on dramatic events to change people's hearts. Our duty is to convey the message with wisdom and beautiful preaching, and to leave the matter of guidance to Allah alone.
Indeed, this verse is a source of comfort for every caller to Islam. It reminds us that the success of our efforts is not measured by how many people respond, but by our sincerity in conveying the truth. And it is a warning to those who make demands of Allah and His Messenger: do not think that your stubbornness will be accommodated. The signs of Allah come by His will, and they come for those who are ready to receive them with humility and faith—not for those who merely want to argue and challenge.
