Surah Al-An'am — Verse 107

• Hafeedhan (حَفِيظًا): A guardian or keeper who watches over and records all their deeds.
• Wakeel (وَكِيلٍ): A trustee, manager, or one entrusted with authority over their affairs to compel or control them.

Tafsir (Explanation):

If Allah had willed that these polytheists should not commit shirk—associating partners with Him—they would never have done so. But His divine will encompasses all that occurs, and He knows, by His eternal knowledge, that they would choose to follow their own corrupt desires and deviate from the truth. Their shirk is a result of their own choice, not a deficiency in Allah's power or wisdom.

O Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Allah has not made you a guardian over them, tasked with recording every deed they commit or holding them accountable for their actions. Nor are you appointed as a trustee over them, responsible for managing their affairs or forcing them to embrace Islam by compulsion. Your role is far simpler and more profound: you are a messenger, and your duty is only to convey the message clearly, to call them to the truth with wisdom and beautiful admonition. Guidance is in Allah's Hands alone, and He grants it to whom He wills.

This verse carries a profound lesson of comfort for the believer: you are not responsible for the choices of others. Your obligation is to deliver the truth with sincerity and excellence, and then to leave the results to Allah. This relieves the heart of undue burden and reminds us that the Prophet's mission—and by extension, the mission of every caller to Islam—is one of mercy and invitation, not coercion or domination. Indeed, the beauty of Islam lies in its respect for human free will, while its truth stands clear for all who seek it with an open heart.
