- Ahyaynahu (أَحْيَيْنَاهُ): We brought him to life — meaning We guided him to faith and illuminated his heart with belief.
- Nooran (نُورًا): A light — referring to the light of Islam, faith, and true guidance.
- Yamshi bihi (يَمْشِي بِهِ): He walks with it — meaning he moves among people with clear insight and discernment.
- Al-Zulumat (الظُّلُمَاتِ): The darknesses — plural, indicating the many layers of disbelief, ignorance, and misguidance.
- Zuyyina (زُيِّنَ): Made to appear attractive — meaning their evil deeds were beautified in their eyes so they saw them as good.
Explanation of the Verse:
This profound verse presents a striking contrast between two kinds of people. Allah asks: Can the one who was spiritually dead — lost in the darkness of disbelief, ignorance, and sin, with no direction or purpose — be compared to the one whom Allah brought to life through faith, granting him a light by which he walks among people, clearly distinguishing truth from falsehood, right from wrong?
The answer is self-evident: they are not equal, just as a living person who sees by light is not equal to a dead person trapped in layers of darkness with no way out. The first has been revived by the gift of iman (faith), which illuminates his heart, guides his steps, and gives his life meaning and direction. The second remains engulfed in the shadows of kufr (disbelief) and sin, unable to find an exit, stumbling in confusion and despair.
Then Allah concludes by explaining a bitter reality: just as the disbelievers who argued with the Prophet (peace be upon him) had their evil deeds made to appear attractive to them — so too are the deeds of all disbelievers beautified in their own eyes. They see their corruption as righteousness, their falsehood as truth, and their harmful ways as beneficial. This is a form of divine justice: because they chose darkness over light, Allah left them to be deceived by their own actions, leading them ultimately to a painful punishment.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this magnificent imagery! Your heart, before guidance, was like a dead body — cold, lifeless, and incapable of true perception. But when the light of faith entered it, it came alive! You began to see the world differently: you recognized your Creator, understood your purpose, and found peace in submission to Him. This is the greatest blessing a human being can receive — the light that guides you through the darkness of this world to the eternal bliss of the Hereafter.
Do not let this light be extinguished! Protect it through prayer, remembrance of Allah, and companionship with the righteous. And if you have not yet received this light, know that the door of mercy is wide open. Allah says in another verse: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53). Call upon Him, and He will bring you from darkness to light, from death to life, and from confusion to clarity. This is the promise of the Most Merciful — and He never breaks His promise.
