Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Kabura (كَبُرَ): It became great, severe, or immense.
  • Maqtan (مَقْتًا): Intense hatred, abhorrence, or detestation—a stronger term than mere anger, signifying deep displeasure and revulsion.
  • An taqooloo (أَن تَقُولُوا): That you say or utter.
  • Ma la taf'aloon (مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ): What you do not do—i.e., promises, claims, or statements that are not backed by action.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse carries a powerful and sobering message: it is an act of immense hatred in the sight of Allah for a person to say with their tongue what they do not put into practice. The wording is deliberately emphatic—"great is hatred with Allah"—to underscore how severely Allah detests this contradiction between speech and deed. It is not merely a minor fault; it is a grave moral failing that strikes at the very heart of a believer's integrity.

The verse was revealed in a context where some believers had expressed eagerness and commitment to strive in the path of Allah, but when the time came to act, they hesitated or fell short. Allah, in His perfect wisdom, used this occasion to teach a timeless lesson: faith is not a matter of empty words. A true believer is one whose actions confirm their statements, whose deeds bear witness to their claims. The hypocrite is known by the gap between what they profess and what they practice, while the sincere believer strives to close that gap entirely.

This principle applies to all areas of life—whether it is promising to do good, advising others to righteousness, or declaring devotion to Allah and His Messenger. If a person calls others to goodness but neglects it themselves, or promises deeds they never fulfill, they incur Allah's displeasure. The verse thus serves as a profound call to self-accountability: before we speak, we must ask ourselves—will we truly do what we are about to say?

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear believer, this verse is a beautiful reminder that Allah values sincerity above all. He does not need our words; He looks at our hearts and our actions. Imagine the joy of standing before your Lord on the Day of Judgment with a record where every word you spoke was matched by a deed—what honor and tranquility that would bring! Conversely, how painful would it be to have your own words testify against you?

Let this verse inspire you to be a person of integrity—one whose speech is light, but whose actions are heavy on the scales. When you promise, fulfill. When you advise, practice. When you declare love for Allah and His Messenger, let your obedience prove it. This is the path of the righteous, the way of the truthful, and the key to earning Allah's pleasure. Allah loves the believer who is consistent, whose tongue and limbs are in harmony, for such a person reflects the beauty of Islam in every aspect of their life. Strive to be among them, and you will find peace in this world and success in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 1-5 — As-Saff

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allah, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?
Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.
Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Moses said to his people, "O my people, why do you harm me while you certainly know that I am the messenger of Allah to you?" And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
