Key Words and Meanings:

  • لِمَ (lima): Why? — a rhetorical question expressing gentle reproach.
  • تُحَرِّمُ (tuharrim): You make forbidden — i.e., you declare something unlawful upon yourself.
  • مَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَكَ (ma ahalla Allahu laka): What Allah has made lawful for you — i.e., something that is entirely permissible by divine decree.
  • تَبْتَغِي (tabtaghi): You seek — with effort and intention.
  • مَرْضَاتَ أَزْوَاجِكَ (mardata azwajik): The pleasure/satisfaction of your wives.
  • غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ (Ghafoorun Raheem): Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful — two of Allah’s beautiful names emphasizing His forgiveness and compassion.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), why do you forbid yourself something that Allah has made perfectly lawful for you? The verse gently but firmly addresses a situation where the Prophet, out of consideration for his wives’ feelings — as they felt jealousy regarding his maidservant Maria (may Allah be pleased with her) — took an oath or resolved to deprive himself of what Allah had permitted. He did this purely to please his wives and maintain harmony in his household.

Yet, Allah reminds him — and through him, all believers — that no human being has the right to declare unlawful what Allah has made lawful. Even a sincere intention to please others cannot override the clear permission of the Creator. The verse does not condemn the Prophet’s noble motive of seeking peace at home, but it corrects the method: one should not achieve harmony by prohibiting what Allah has allowed.

The verse concludes with a beautiful reassurance: "And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." This is not a harsh rebuke but a loving correction. Allah immediately follows the gentle admonition with His mercy, showing that He forgives His Prophet and is compassionate toward him. It also serves as a lesson for all believers: when we err, even in matters of sincere intention, Allah’s door of forgiveness is wide open. He does not abandon us in our mistakes; rather, He guides us back with gentleness and mercy.

This verse teaches us a profound principle: Islam is a religion of ease, not hardship. Allah has made good things lawful for us, and we should not burden ourselves with unnecessary prohibitions. At the same time, it highlights the high status of the Prophet — that Allah would address him directly with such care, correcting him in the most loving manner, and forgiving him instantly.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless message for every Muslim. How often do we impose unnecessary restrictions upon ourselves or others, thinking we are being more pious? True piety is not found in forbidding what Allah has permitted, but in obeying His commands with sincerity and balance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself was corrected on this matter, and he accepted it with humility — teaching us that no one is above guidance.

Let this verse inspire you to embrace the ease of Islam. Do not let the opinions of people — even those closest to you — push you into making life harder than Allah intended. Seek the pleasure of Allah above all, and when you slip, remember that your Lord is Al-Ghafoor, Al-Raheem — He forgives and showers you with mercy. Turn to Him, seek His forgiveness, and continue your journey with hope and trust in His boundless compassion.
