The Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, the disbelievers will be brought before their Lord, and their eyes will be cast down in utter humility—unable to lift their gaze out of sheer terror and shame. A profound disgrace will envelop them, covering them from all sides as a visible mark of their ruin and regret. Yet, the most painful part of this scene is the reminder of what they had squandered: in their worldly life, they were repeatedly called to prostrate before Allah in prayer—to worship Him alone and submit to His command—while they were in full health, strength, and safety. They had no excuse of sickness, poverty, or oppression; they were capable and able-bodied, yet they refused out of arrogance and pride. Now, in the Hereafter, they will be invited to prostrate again, but they will not be able to do so, as their backs will be stiffened and their spines broken—a punishment that mirrors their worldly rebellion.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a profound wake-up call for every soul that breathes. It paints a vivid picture of a moment when regret will be useless, and opportunities will be gone forever. But today, right now, you are alive, healthy, and free—just like those who were called to prayer before. The doors of repentance and worship are wide open for you. Every time you hear the call to prayer (Adhān), it is a divine invitation to draw near to Allah, to prostrate and humble yourself before the One who created you. Do not let arrogance or procrastination steal this blessing from you. Imagine standing before Allah on that Day, wishing you had prostrated just once more—but the time will have passed. Seize this moment, answer the call, and let your forehead touch the ground in gratitude and submission. For the prostration that feels heavy today will be a light and a shield for you on the Day when all else fails.
