Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍ (Yukshafu 'an saq): Literally, "the shin is uncovered." This is a metaphor for the severity and intensity of the Day of Judgment, when the matter becomes extremely difficult and the divine majesty is manifested. It is also authentically reported that Allah will uncover His noble shin in a manner befitting His majesty, without any resemblance to creation.
- وَيُدْعَوْنَ (Wa yud'awun): They will be called and summoned.
- فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ (Fala yastati'un): They will not be able to do so.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Resurrection, the terror and hardship of that Day will reach its peak, and the Lord of the heavens and the earth will come to judge between His creation, uncovering His noble shin in a way that suits His majesty and perfection—a matter that no mind can comprehend and no description can encompass. At that moment, every believer—male and female—will be called to prostrate before their Lord, and they will readily fall into prostration, honored and rewarded for their faith and obedience in the worldly life.
However, the disbelievers and hypocrites—those who used to pretend to worship in public for show and reputation, while their hearts were empty of faith—will also be called to prostrate, but they will be utterly unable to do so. Their backs will become like a single stiff plate, rigid and inflexible, preventing them from bowing down. This is a humiliating punishment and a painful rebuke for those who refused to submit to Allah sincerely in the world, yet now are forced to attempt what they once rejected.
This scene is among the most severe moments of the Hereafter, where the truth is fully unveiled, and every soul reaps what it sowed. The believers, who worshipped Allah in secret and public with pure hearts, will be honored with prostration and closeness to Him. As for the hypocrites, who deceived people in the world, they will be exposed and disgraced before all of creation, unable to perform even a single act of worship.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound reminder that faith is not a mask we wear for others, but a reality rooted in the heart and reflected in our actions. The prostration of the Hereafter is a reward for the prostration of sincerity in this life. So, let us hasten to prostrate to our Lord in humility and love, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Generous. He has opened the door of repentance for us until the final hour. Do not wait until the Day when the shin is uncovered and the call to prostrate comes—when it will be too late for those who delayed. Embrace the light of Islam today, and let every sujood (prostration) you perform in this world be a witness for you, not against you, on that momentous Day. Indeed, Allah is near, He answers the call of the supplicant, and His mercy encompasses all things.
