Surah Al-A'raf — Verse 194

Word Meanings:

• تَدْعُونَ (you call upon): Here it means you worship and invoke.
• مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ (besides Allah): Meaning other than Allah, i.e., the idols.
• عِبَادٌ (servants): Slaves and possessions of Allah, created and owned by Him.
• أَمْثَالُكُمْ (like yourselves): Similar to you in being created, owned, and subjugated by Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

O you who associate partners with Allah, those idols and false deities you worship and call upon instead of Allah — they are nothing but created beings, owned and subjugated by Allah, just as you are His servants and possessions. In fact, you are better than them in many ways, for you are living beings who hear, see, speak, and move, while your idols are lifeless objects that can do none of this.

So, if you truly believe, as you claim, that these idols deserve any share of worship or can bring you benefit or harm, then put your claim to the test — call upon them and ask them to respond to you and grant you what you seek. If they can answer you and fulfill your needs, then your claim might have some basis. But if they remain silent and powerless — and they surely will — then it becomes clear that you are liars, fabricating falsehood against Allah by worshipping beings that are no better than you, and indeed far inferior.

This is a decisive challenge from Allah to the polytheists: either prove the divinity of your idols by having them respond to your calls, or admit the truth that they are mere creations, powerless and unworthy of any worship. The inability of these idols to answer is the clearest proof that worship belongs to Allah alone, the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to use your God-given intellect. If you were to ask a lifeless idol for help, it would not hear you; if you asked it for guidance, it could not speak; if you asked it for provision, it could not move. Yet Allah, the Almighty, hears every whisper, answers every sincere call, and provides for every creature. He is closer to you than your own jugular vein. So why turn to those who cannot even help themselves? Turn to the One whose door is always open, whose mercy encompasses everything, and whose power knows no limits. Call upon Him sincerely, and He will answer you — for He has promised: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Quran 40:60). This is the pure and simple truth that brings peace to the heart and success in this life and the Hereafter.
