- Bawwa'akum (بَوَّأَكُمْ): Settled you, established you, or gave you a firm place of dwelling.
- Suhuliha (سُهُولِهَا): Its plains or flat, open lands (as opposed to mountains).
- Qusuran (قُصُورًا): Palaces or magnificent, fortified buildings.
- Tanhitun (تَنْحِتُونَ): You carve, cut, or hew (especially into rock or stone).
- Al'a Allah (آلَاءَ اللَّهِ): The favours, blessings, and bounties of Allah.
- Ta'thaw (تَعْثَوْا): To commit great corruption, spread mischief, or act with severe wickedness — the root word *'ayth* refers to the most extreme form of corruption and disorder.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, in His infinite mercy, reminds the people of Thamud — and through them, all of humanity — of the profound blessings He bestowed upon them, so that their hearts might soften and turn to Him in gratitude. He calls upon them to remember the time when He made them successors on earth after the destruction of the mighty people of 'Ad, who had been destroyed for their arrogance and persistent denial of the truth. This very succession was a sign of Allah's grace — a second chance for a new nation to learn from the mistakes of those before them and to walk the path of righteousness.
Not only did Allah grant them succession, but He also settled them firmly in the land, giving them the means and the ability to build and prosper. From the flat, open plains, they constructed magnificent palaces and towering fortresses, while in the mountains, they skillfully carved out secure homes — a remarkable engineering feat that showcased the strength and intelligence Allah had gifted them. In summer, they would dwell in their clay-built palaces on the plains, and in winter, they would retreat to their warm, mountain-carved dwellings. This was no small favour — it was a life of comfort, security, and prosperity, all made possible by the grace of Allah alone.
And so, the call comes: "Remember the favours of Allah" — not merely with the tongue, but with the heart and by using those blessings in obedience to Him. Gratitude is not just a word; it is a way of life. When you recognise that every palace you build, every mountain you carve, and every breath you take is a gift from your Lord, your heart naturally fills with love for Him, and your limbs move in submission to His will.
Then comes the warning, wrapped in tenderness: "And do not spread corruption in the land." The word *'ayth* here is not just any mischief — it is the most severe, destructive form of corruption. This includes disbelief in Allah, committing sins, oppressing others, and using the very blessings Allah gave you as tools of disobedience. How tragic it would be to take the gifts of the Most Merciful and use them to defy Him! How unfortunate to be given a palace, only to fill it with arrogance and transgression!
The message is timeless and universal. Every one of us has been given blessings — some have wealth, others have health, others have knowledge, and others have strength. The question is: are we using these blessings to draw closer to Allah, or are we using them to spread corruption? The people of Thamud were given wonders of architecture and strength, yet they chose arrogance and rejected the truth, and their fate became a lesson for all of humanity.
So, dear reader, look at your own life. Count the favours of Allah upon you — they are countless. Let that awareness fill your heart with gratitude, and let that gratitude translate into action: worship, kindness, justice, and mercy. And beware of corruption in all its forms, for the earth is Allah's, and He has placed you upon it as a trustee, not a tyrant. Prosperity is a test, and the one who passes it is the one who remembers the Giver, not the one who is deluded by the gift. May Allah make us among those who remember His favours and use them in ways that please Him.
