Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Thamud: A powerful Arab tribe that lived in the rocky dwellings of Al-Hijr (Mada'in Salih), known for their advanced stone-carving skills.
  • Their brother Salih: A prophet sent to them, called "brother" because he was from their own lineage and tribe, not because they shared the same faith.
  • Baiyinah (clear proof): A definitive, unmistakable sign that proves the truthfulness of the caller.
  • Naqat Allah (the she-camel of Allah): A unique, miraculous camel that Allah created as a sign, attributed to Allah to honor it and show it was not owned by anyone.
  • Leave her to eat: Do not hinder her from grazing freely in Allah's earth.
  • Do not touch her with harm: Do not harm her in any way—neither by wounding, striking, nor killing her.
  • Painful punishment: A severe torment that would seize them in this world before the Hereafter.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After the story of the people of 'Ad and their destruction, Allah turns to another great nation—the tribe of Thamud. They were a people of immense strength and skill, carving magnificent homes into the mountains, yet they fell into the worship of idols instead of their Creator. So Allah, in His infinite mercy, sent them a messenger from among themselves—Prophet Salih (peace be upon him)—a man they knew, trusted, and could easily approach. He was their brother in lineage, not in religion, and this was a mercy from Allah so that they could not excuse themselves by saying, "We do not know him."

Salih stood before his people and delivered the essence of his message: "O my people, worship Allah alone. You have no god worthy of worship other than Him." This is the eternal call of every prophet—the call to pure monotheism, to free the heart from every false object of worship and direct it solely to the One who created the heavens and the earth. There is no deity deserving of your love, your fear, your hope, and your devotion except Allah—the One who gives life and death, who provides and sustains, who alone holds the keys of mercy and justice.

But Salih knew that words alone were not enough for a people who demanded proof. So he said: "A clear sign has come to you from your Lord." And what was that sign? It was a magnificent she-camel that emerged from a solid rock by the command of Allah—a living miracle that defied all natural laws. This was not merely an animal; it was a divine testimony, a visible proof that Salih was truly sent by Allah. The very fact that this camel appeared from solid stone, in response to their own challenge, was enough to silence every skeptic and leave every heart accountable.

Then came the divine instruction: "So leave her to eat in Allah's earth, and do not touch her with any harm, lest a painful punishment seize you." Notice the beautiful wisdom here—the camel was to graze freely in Allah's earth, and no one was to interfere with her. This was a test of obedience: would they respect the boundaries Allah set? Would they honor the sign He placed before them? The command was simple, yet it carried profound meaning: if they could not even restrain themselves from harming a single camel that Allah had protected, how could they claim to be servants of Allah?

The warning was clear and direct: any harm to this camel would bring a painful punishment upon them. This was not an empty threat—it was a mercy in disguise. Allah was giving them a chance to turn back, to accept the truth, and to save themselves from destruction. The punishment was avoidable; all they had to do was obey.

Dear reader, reflect on this story. How often does Allah send us signs—clear proofs, answered prayers, moments of guidance—and yet we turn away? How often does He place boundaries for our own good, and yet we cross them? The story of Salih and Thamud is not just history; it is a living lesson. Allah's signs are all around us: the Qur'an with its unmatched truth, the universe with its perfect order, and the guidance that reaches our hearts in moments of sincerity. The question is: will we honor these signs, or will we harm them by our arrogance and disobedience?

The choice is ours. The she-camel was a test, and so is every command Allah gives us today. Let us learn from those who came before us—let us submit, obey, and find peace in the boundaries Allah has set. For His boundaries are not restrictions; they are protection. And His punishment, though delayed, is certain for those who persist in transgression. May Allah make us among those who listen to the truth and follow the best of it.

📜 Verse 71-75 — Al-A'raf

[Hud] said, "Already have defilement and anger fallen upon you from your Lord. Do you dispute with me concerning [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has not sent down any authority? Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait."
So We saved him and those with him by mercy from Us. And We eliminated those who denied Our signs, and they were not [at all] believers.
And to the Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. This is the she-camel of Allah [sent] to you as a sign. So leave her to eat within Allah 's land and do not touch her with harm, lest there seize you a painful punishment.
And remember when He made you successors after the 'Aad and settled you in the land, [and] you take for yourselves palaces from its plains and carve from the mountains, homes. Then remember the favors of Allah and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."
Said the eminent ones who were arrogant among his people to those who were oppressed - to those who believed among them, "Do you [actually] know that Salih is sent from his Lord?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which he was sent, are believers."
