Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- As-Sabihat (السَّابِحَاتِ): The angels that "swim" or glide swiftly through the heavens, moving with ease and speed in their descent and ascent, just as a swimmer moves smoothly through water.
- Sabhan (سَبْحًا): Swift, smooth movement — indicating rapid, effortless motion, like a skilled horse galloping at full speed.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty takes an oath by the angels who "swim" through the heavens — that is, those who descend from the sky to the earth and ascend back to it with remarkable speed and grace, carrying out His commands without hesitation or delay. Just as a swimmer glides through water with ease, these noble angels traverse the vast expanses of the universe in obedience to their Lord, moving swiftly and smoothly in the execution of His divine will.
This oath serves to draw our attention to the magnificent order of the universe and the tireless service of these honored creatures, who are ever-ready to fulfill Allah's commands. The mention of their "swimming" through the heavens invites us to reflect on the grandeur of Allah's creation — the unseen realms that operate with perfect precision, all submitting to the will of their Creator.
The oath itself is a prelude to the profound news that follows: the certainty of the Resurrection and the Day of Reckoning. By swearing by these swift-moving angels, Allah emphasizes the absolute certainty of what is to come — that every soul shall be raised and held accountable for its deeds.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder for a moment: if angels can traverse the heavens with such speed and ease in obedience to Allah, how much more should we, as human beings endowed with reason and free will, hasten to obey our Lord? The universe operates in perfect harmony with His command — the angels do not delay, the heavens do not falter. Yet we, who have been given the gift of choice, often procrastinate in our duties toward our Creator.
Let this verse inspire you to move through life with purpose and swiftness toward goodness — to pray on time, to give charity without delay, to seek knowledge eagerly, and to turn to Allah in repentance before it is too late. Just as the angels "swim" through the heavens in service to Allah, let your heart "swim" through the ocean of His mercy, drawing closer to Him with every breath. The Day will surely come when all shall return to Him — prepare for it now, while there is still time.
