Word Meanings:
- As-Sabiqat (السَّابِقَاتِ): The ones that race ahead or outstrip others.
- Sabqan (سَبْقًا): A swift, rapid racing or outpacing — used here as an emphatic verbal noun to stress the speed and decisiveness of the action.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty takes an oath by the angels who race forward with utmost speed to execute His commands. These are the angels that hasten to fulfill whatever task their Lord assigns them — whether it is delivering revelation, recording deeds, or carrying out other divine orders — and they outstrip one another in their obedience and swiftness.
Some scholars have explained that these are the angels who race ahead of the devils when the divine revelation descends, so that the devils cannot intercept or steal any part of it. They rush with the revelation to the prophets, peace be upon them, protecting it from any corruption. Others have noted that they race to the heavens and descend from them swiftly, never hesitating or delaying in carrying out their Lord's command.
The oath here serves to emphasize the certainty of the Resurrection and the Day of Reckoning — that every soul shall be held accountable for its deeds. Just as these angels are swift and precise in their obedience, so too will the events of that Day come to pass without fail, and no soul shall escape the justice of its Creator.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse invites us to contemplate the perfect order of the universe, where angels — created from light — race to obey their Lord without hesitation. If these noble creatures hasten to serve Allah with such devotion, how much more should we, as human beings endowed with intellect and free will, strive to obey our Creator? Let this image of angelic swiftness inspire us to be quick in doing good, to hasten towards repentance, and to race towards acts of kindness and righteousness — for the Day will surely come when we shall meet our Lord, and on that Day, the swiftest among us will be those who raced towards His pleasure.
