If you [have reason to] fear from a people betrayal, throw [their treaty] back to them, [putting you] on equal terms. Indeed, Allah does not like traitors.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Khianah (خِيَانَةً): Betrayal, treachery, or breach of a covenant/trust.
  • Fanbidh (فَانبِذْ): Cast away, throw back, or return (the treaty/agreement).
  • Ala Sawa’ (عَلَىٰ سَوَاءٍ): On equal footing, so that both parties are equally aware and informed.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger of Allah, and O believers who uphold the sacred duty of honoring agreements: if you perceive from a people with whom you have a treaty clear signs of treachery and betrayal—evidenced by their actions, words, or circumstances—then do not fall into deception or wait until they strike you by surprise. Instead, openly cast their treaty back at them, declaring its annulment in a manner that makes both parties equally aware that the pact is no longer in effect. This ensures that you are not guilty of breaching the agreement yourself, and you give them a fair chance to prepare for whatever comes next, just as you prepare.

This command reflects the sublime ethics of Islam, even in times of conflict and tension. The believer is never to resort to deceit or treachery, even toward those who may be plotting betrayal. The standard of justice and transparency must be upheld, and the moral high ground must never be abandoned.

Indeed, Allah does not love the treacherous—those who break their covenants and violate their trusts. Such people are detested by Allah, and their affairs will never prosper. Therefore, be ever vigilant in honoring your commitments, and if you must sever a bond, do so with clarity, fairness, and dignity, so that your conscience remains pure and your conduct remains a shining example to all.

Da’wah Reflection:

This verse is a profound lesson in the character of the believer. Islam teaches us to be people of integrity, honesty, and fairness in all our dealings—whether with friends or foes. Imagine a world where every promise is kept, every agreement is honored, and even when disputes arise, they are resolved with transparency and mutual respect. This is the beautiful standard that Allah has set for us. By adhering to these principles, we not only earn the love of Allah but also become a source of trust and safety for humanity. Let this verse inspire you to be a person whose word is as solid as a mountain, and whose conduct reflects the light of faith. For Allah is with those who are truthful and faithful, and He loves those who uphold justice in all circumstances.

📜 Verse 56-60 — Al-Anfal

The ones with whom you made a treaty but then they break their pledge every time, and they do not fear Allah.
So if you, [O Muhammad], gain dominance over them in war, disperse by [means of] them those behind them that perhaps they will be reminded.
If you [have reason to] fear from a people betrayal, throw [their treaty] back to them, [putting you] on equal terms. Indeed, Allah does not like traitors.
And let not those who disbelieve think they will escape. Indeed, they will not cause failure [to Allah].
And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.
