Surah At-Takwir — Verse 7

Word Meanings:

• An-Nufus (النفوس): The souls of all creation, both the righteous and the wicked.
• Zuwijat (زوّجت): Paired or joined together with their like and kind — the righteous with the righteous, and the wicked with the wicked.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the sun is wound up and loses its light, when the stars fall and scatter, when the mountains are set in motion and become as dust, when the pregnant camels are left untended, when the wild beasts are gathered together, when the seas are set ablaze — and when the souls are paired with their kind — then every soul shall know what it has brought forth.

This pairing means that souls shall be joined according to their nature and deeds. The righteous shall be gathered with the righteous, and the wicked shall be gathered with the wicked. Just as people in this world are drawn to those who share their character and inclinations, on that Day the ultimate companionship shall be sealed: the people of faith and good deeds shall be united with the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous — the best of company. And the people of corruption and evil shall be joined with their like, among the devils and the wicked, in a company that brings only regret.

This verse reminds us that our true identity is not in our wealth, status, or appearance, but in the state of our souls. What we cultivate within — faith, sincerity, patience, and love for goodness — determines who we shall be paired with on that awesome Day. It is a call to purify our hearts and to choose our companions wisely in this life, for the company we keep here is a reflection of where we shall belong in the Hereafter.
