Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fatanū (فَتَنُوا): They tortured, persecuted, and severely tested the believers by burning them in fire to turn them away from their faith.
- Al-Ḥarīq (الْحَرِيقِ): The burning, scorching fire that consumes and causes intense pain.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah Almighty informs us of the severe fate awaiting those who persecuted and tortured the believing men and women—burning them in blazing pits of fire simply because they held firm to their faith in Allah alone. These tyrants subjected the believers to unimaginable suffering, seeking to force them to abandon their religion. Yet, despite the enormity of their crime, Allah mentions that if they had repented, He would have accepted their repentance, for His mercy encompasses all things. However, they persisted in their disbelief and cruelty, refusing to turn back to their Lord in sincere repentance before death.
For these oppressors, there is a double punishment: they will suffer the torment of Hellfire due to their disbelief and rejection of Allah, and they will additionally endure the specific punishment of the burning fire—a scorching, searing torment that matches the very crime they committed against the believers. This is divine justice in its most perfect form: those who burned the faithful in this world will themselves be burned in the Hereafter, but with a fire far more intense and painful than any earthly flame.
A Call to Reflection and Repentance:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. It demonstrates that no sin is beyond forgiveness if one sincerely repents before death—even the heinous crime of burning believers alive. The door of repentance remains open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Yet, it also warns that persisting in oppression and refusing to repent leads to a punishment that is both just and terrifying.
For us as believers, this verse strengthens our resolve to remain steadfast in our faith, no matter the trials we face. It reassures us that Allah sees every act of injustice and will repay each oppressor with perfect justice. It also reminds us of the immense value of our faith—so precious that the tyrants of history were willing to burn people alive to strip it from them. Let us hold onto our faith with gratitude and pride, and let us never cease to seek Allah's forgiveness, for His mercy is greater than any sin we could commit.
